Tell me what you think! I'm actually almost done with chapter two as well! lol
~Chapter One~
“Excuse me, miss?” I heard a male voice saying as I slept on the flight from Charlotte, North Carolina to Seoul, South Korea. I slowly opened my eyes and rubbed them to get rid of all the crust. “We’re landing now; would you lift your seat up, please?”
“Oh!” I said, blushing with embarrassment. “Yeah, of course. Thanks.”
I lifted the back of my seat and, when the passengers were given the okay, unbuckled my seatbelt and got ready to deplane.
The purpose of this cross-globe trip was to meet up with Bae Soon-Yeon, a pen pal I’d had since seventh grade. This will be our first time meeting in person, and I was beyond excited for it.
Once I went through Korean customs and baggage claim, as well as the process of getting a rental car (it was a nice champagne-colored Chevy Sonic), I checked into the hotel and got settled before calling Soon-Yeon on the number she’d given me. A female voice answered after two rings with something in Korean.
“Um… hi,” I said nervously, not having a clue what she just said. “Is Bae Soon-Yeon there? I hope I have the right number; this is Rachel Browning.”
There was a pause, and for a minute I started to think she’d hung up on me.
“Hello?” I repeated.
The girl laughed. “I’m just playing; of course, this is Bae Soon-Yeon! It’s so good to finally talk to you, Rachel-ssi. How was the flight?”
“It was okay. I got into town about an hour ago and just checked into a motel for the night. I was thinking we could meet up for breakfast somewhere.”
“That sounds good. There’s a breakfast café called Innisfree, which has very good food; I go there all the time. Shall I give you directions?”
“That would be wonderful!” I cradled the phone between my left ear and shoulder as I grabbed a pen and the pad of paper on the bedside table. “I’m ready when you are!”
After she finished dictating, I told Soon-Yeon to have a good night and that I’d see her tomorrow.
-*-
The next morning after I finished getting ready to meet Soon-Yeon, I called my grandma, who was watching my golden retriever Trixie for me, to tell her I’d gotten into Seoul last night. She answered immediately.
“Hey, it’s Rach!” I said.
“Hello there, Rachel!” Gramma greeted. “Did you get into town okay? I know this was your first international flight. And did they accommodate you well?”
The reason Gramma asked this question was because I’m 35 weeks pregnant with what would’ve been my boyfriend Wesley’s first child if we hadn’t broken up.
Wesley had called it quits on me after five years of dating, just when I thought he was going to finally propose. Instead of a shiny diamond ring on my 21st birthday, though, he gave me a Dear Jane note saying he was leaving me for his ex. Apparently, he hadn’t stopped thinking about her, even after we found out about the baby; I’ve lost my trust in men ever since.
“Yeah, they put me in the first row,” I said to Gramma. “I was just about to head out for breakfast, but I thought I’d call you first.”
“Oh?”
“Yep! Remember me telling you about my middle-school pen pal, Soon-Yeon? I’m meeting up with her this morning.”
“Oh, yes – I do remember! Where are you going?”
“This place called Innisfree; Soon-Yeon says the food there is delicious.”
“Oh, how exciting! Your puppy has been missing you dearly, by the way; she was looking high and low for you all day today!”
“Aw… well, I’ve got to go, but tell Trixie I miss her too. Bye, Gramma; love you!”
“I love you, too, dearie.”
