I know what you're talking about. In Mass Effect: Andromeda [which a lot of people didn't like] there were romance options for gay and lesbian characters. Same with Dragon Age Inquisition.. I think it would just be easier to be able to romance whoever for the games which let you ascribe your character a gender... My Time At Portia did something like this.

Even in those games (and I absolutely adore Dragon Age & Mass Effect series), LGBTQ+ romances were not well written or portrayed.
While it was definitely nice to have the options.

If you have great writers they'll add enough options, especially for RPGs, which is necessary imo.
While for example, DAI gay/lesbian romances existed,

Dorian basically wanted to get away from you as fast as possible after the ending,
Iron Bull could just straight up betray you,
Sera is very naive and if you go against her word at any moments she'll most likely just break up
Josephine did not get enough attention to her romance story as much as others.

For Mass Effect Andromeda, the Gay/Lesbian romances had like 10-30 minutes of content where as the straight options, especially with Cora exceeded over an hour. And Mass Effect 1-2 only had 1 lesbian romance options, with 3 they've made two of the main cast suddenly bi and added a side character for a gay romance.

Dragon Age Origins and Dragon Age 2 had great options, romances in both those games were written very well.

LGBTQ+ romances in games are most likely always rushed, unless you play like The Sims or Romance Novel games like Coming Out On Top (18+) and stuff like that.

While it's, as I said, still great to have those options, as a gay gamer myself, I wish for more, that writers put as much effort into LGBTQ+ romances as they do for straight ones, that we get the same amount of content as straight romances.

I hope that Cyberpunk 2077 is going to do that as the front runner of new gen RPGs and not fall into the same hole as most RPGs I've played did.

There is some romance. But if you alter it it any way then FF7 becomes a completely different game. That would make it NOT the game that people grew up with and loved.

As for the OP,
FF7 or Final Fantasy in general aren't really your usually games you play that have romance as one of their core gameplay features, so it doesn't really make sense to add/change stuff in that regard for a Remake, which mostly just includes better graphics and fight overhaul etc.. Isn't it more of like a turned-based strategy game? Or at least it was back then.
99.9% of the time characters won't change in any regard besides graphics.

What they said about adding characters that are LGBTQ+, I mean I'd be all for it, but a remake is a retelling of the original characters, so to suddenly shift to focus to a completely new character that doesnt seem to bring anything to the plot besides just a romance doesnt sound like a good addition to me.

lol.. I only did one playthrough with Andromeda, but I did see walkthroughs on YT with Reyes picked as a romance option and it just seemed flippant and weird...

yeah.. i wanted to do a romance with him but i picked an option that made him vanish forever so

If I had to pick between adding another badly represented LGBTQ+ romance option or none at all I'd pick the none at all, it's just so saddening to me

lol I think its funny that straight people get so offended when LGBT+ people ask for more representation. If you look at the history of LGBT+ representation in media there's a lot longer and horrid history of us being erased from movies, books, games, etc. to satisfy or make straight audiences comfortable.

As much as people complain now of lgbt people being added to everything or changing stuff, that's been happening to us much longer and for much crueler reasons. The effects of the Hays code is still very present in our media and why the "bury your gays" trope is a hot topic today.

This to me does sound like someones take on the games romantic storylines just from the remake as if you play the original there is a point in the game where depending on your affinity with certain characters at that point then you can have a date with either Tifa, Aerith or Barret as Cloud which albeit it is an awkward date however I think out of all the Final Fantasies to ask for more representation then FF7 isn't really the one to ask that from as out of the most popular ones (7, 8, 9 & 10) then 7 has like the most representation.

not to mention the remake is not the same as the original, I didn't play ff7 but didn't the remake, like not kill that one girl whos death was major in the original?? why does everything have to be the same? and I don't think fans are asking for the main characters to only focus on lgbt representation and take away from the main plot of the story.

The remake so far only covers part of disc 1 on the original and the part where Aerith dies comes later than the part they have covered.

On the topic of representation as a whole there is an option in the original for you to go on a date with Barret which they added a similar part to in the first part of the remake which is set earlier than the part from the original.

Now the possibility of adding that to the main characters can be tricky as a lot of characters in FF7 have already got romantic backgrounds as there is a lot to FF7s story that the remake is attempting to tie together. That being said I don't know of any romantic implications about Barret and Yuffie so it's possible they could be expanded on in that regard but it should be in a way that deepens their character as otherwise it'll add a dimension to their character that wasn't known before just for representation.

The first part of the remake did show willingness to change parts of the original story which could help enrich the story as more gets covered in more depth and maybe they can give a semi important character to have a same gender romantic interest however I don't feel like I need to know any more about that aspect of the main characters than what stuff is already out there but if done in the right way then I'd be open to it.
