Why do you think hit songs by Idol groups are becoming rarer these days? (1 Viewer)

Idols who aren’t in the top three groups are C tier at best in Korea, idol music is not popular over there and niether are the idols. Nobody cares about the same boy group with 12 members debuting every single week.

not to mention the idol industry is catering more to younger teens now then ever.
Also the music is different, not as catchy and it’s mainly appealing to international fans.

Fandoms are a lot stronger at streaming now so its harder to get hits and to actually see what's a hit song. Having tons of yt views and streams on a platform is no longer that great of a indicator to whether a song is popular or not (amongst general public). With having top groups consistently be at the top of streaming sites lists its also harder for smaller groups or artists to get the same recognition.

Like Winner's "Really Really" is the last song I remember being a national hit and it came out 3 years ago (almost 4 in less than 6 months) and since 2016/17 streaming has only become more competitive.

You had Love Scenario that came out about a year after that which I think was an even bigger hit. I don't know whether this counts but the last time that I remember a idol song that really seemed to get people talking was ITZY's debut...

I forgot about Love Scenario tbh after while it got annoying and I stopped listening lmao. But still streaming has gotten more prevalent in fandoms since then so its harder to break through.

Yeah but I don't think the song was a hit per say but people were interested in what JYP's new girl group was going to sound like

I feel like PSY's new boy group might stand a chance especially since he's says he wants to make a group like him but in idol form... that would definitely be something different from the norm!

I think it definitely shows a lack of interest when you look at the top 10 girl group songs points for this year and Gaon also wrote an opinion piece in June that showed that while streaming has been steadily increasing every year however downloads have been declining since the start of 2019

it to safe to be the same cause the money is coming from basic kpop western fans who only care about idols themselves not the music...

I have noticed that... I think that is the reason why I couldn't really get into much Korean songs in 2020 or even last year

You know that as a music lover I focus more on the sound than on the idols

I think it's a mix of an oversaturated market and that only popular groups are getting hit songs, like BTS & Blackpink, which the GP focuses more on rather than all of the other hundreds of groups

Not exactly out of nowhere, Nonstop blew up after they went on Knowing Bros which is the same thing they did when Secret Garden hit #2 and Dolphin blew up after IU said she liked it but yeah they don't fit with BTS and Blackpink.
