News The Show changes The Show Choice winning criteria (2 Viewers)

The new criteria is:

• 40% Digitals
• 10% Albums
• 20% Video Score
• 15% Broadcast Score
• 15% Live Text Voting (requires KR phone number)

Earlier criteria used to be:

• 40% Digitals
• 10% Albums
• 20% Video Score
• 15% Broadcast Score
• 5% Pre-voting
• 10% Live Voting

Basically the 5% pre-voting has been removed and live voting can only be done by Korean fans now, not i-fans. Expectedly, i-fans aren't happy. The Show is usually seen as the place where many smaller groups or groups with small Korean fandoms but decent i-fanbase get their first wins, this essentially kills a lot of their chances.

Wouldn't be surprised if a Dreamcatcher 1st win never happens now, or some other groups as well since The Show Choice was where people hoped it would be the most achievable.

I guess this is their way of appealing to more domestic viewers.

The pre-voting literally did nothing, when A.C.E or other groups I liked reached the #1 spot in the pre-voting they werent even guaranteed for the 3 "finalists" or sth, idk why they even had it in the first place

It's going to be hard for deserving groups to win #1 on The Show just because Korea doesn't like their music style much compared to the usual.

For example, Dreamcatcher's chances of getting a win on The Show is not great at all now.

This honestly doesn't change much as the amount of points the voting is worth is still only 1500 where as the other categories are worth 8500 in total so for the voting to make a difference then it'd need to be artists who are fairly close in the other categories.

The 20% video score though is Youtube views which is worth more than the voting and done primarily by international fans as korean fans mostly use Naver

It is absolutely the thing I hate most about Kpop. They have used Kpop as soft power, weaponized fandom, and then tied the hands of any group whose fans are majority international. It's not only unfair, it's cruel. I'd understand these changes if companies didn't put so much effort on marketing to International audiences, but now with the globalization of Kpop, it means that groups can be hugely popular overseas but still fold and disband because the only opinions that matter are those of Koreans. Imagine being in one of those groups, having that popularity, but still being treated as lesser just because your fans aren't the right type of fans. So much rides on these shows (even though it shouldn't) when wins can be the difference between making it and disbandment, every vote should count.

I'm sure some will make the argument that these shows are Korean, and supposed to represent what groups are popular inside Korea, but the truth is that the GP doesn't really consume all that much Kpop, so they're not an accurate representation of trends, anyways. If they were, there would be far more soloists, bands, and trot singers promoting and winning there.

Overall, this trend towards Korean participation only is going to make these weekly shows even less entertaining, because it means the same artists will just keep winning over and over. Kpop is already slowing down and stagnating due to the intense focus on a smaller subset of artists, this will only add to the creative bottleneck.

The Show is on MTV Asia live every wekk with English Subs in almost every S.E.A. country i think. They hv sold it to be broadcast and seen but dont want to play nice now, such a pity. Why even co-operate with MTV to broadcast it live if the audience are doomed to be frustrated, or is it tat the ratings are too low outside and in Korea?

Anything to stop Dreamcatcher from getting their 1st win....

They should've had two from The Show now.
First one was wrongfully gifted to Everglow instead. Meanwhile last year on the week when their win was guaranteed, The Show announced that they wouldn't be airing on that particular week.

So it is actually the right thing.
company x that is domestic does not want some act popular in say Europe to preform at the company dinner.

That makes absolutely zero sense from a marketing standpoint, especially when overseas fame is seen as a bragging point (and is what kpop is used for, soft power overseas).

Maybe they finally realized StarPlay app is a giant piece of shit and never works. Either way, sucks for every group that will have a CB before The Show gets their act together.
