Some people, including my therapist, have an issue with the phrase because they think the association with commit would be negative, and they prefer the phrase complete suicide. What do you guys think about it?

I personally don't see an issue with it, commit can mean carry out which is accurate for someone who kills themselves, they have carried out an act that is not necessarily immoral.

As someone who hasn't personally struggled with thoughts of suicide, I don't see a problem with the phrase. I don't know how others who struggle with those thoughts might feel though.

Well I do kind of get that we use commit when referring to negative acts which are mostly crimes even though I can't say that it bothers me directly however complete just sounds even worse to me as when I think of the word complete it makes me think about people who have worked hard to finish something and this is definitely not a goal for someone to work towards

I assure you that this is the last thing a person who is thinking about killing herself is thinking about.
Well they may not be thinking about this phrase exactly but they would be thinking about the negative connotation suicide in general has, and oftentimes they feel selfish and like they're a bad person for considering it.

I wish that was on my mind, when I´m thinking about jumping under the train, but again, I assure you I don´t really worry about that. I actually think it is belittling the serious matter, the feelings and the inner fights that a depressed person must go through as minimalizing one´s troubles to some word connotations.

you can call it whatever you want, but it does not change a thing. complete suicide makes it sound like an accomplishment and it is terribly harsh from your therapist to use. almost makes me wonder whether she is speaking out of empathy or some weird love for semantics.

and I just want to clarify I´m not angry at you Vikki, but at your therapist who should be a professional and should concentrate on more serious issues.

This seems negligible. Even if it something that I thought was valid, having someone abandon colloquialisms they have been using for years is not likely to happen. I do wonder if people with actual feelings of suicide actually feel offended by the use of 'committed' or if its the typical kneejerk reaction of people not part of a group that do.

No offense is meant toward @Vikki and I think that is clear, but since it is her counselor we are talking about... she prolly has a close relationship with him/her and I want to make clear that I am not insulting her counselor.

Commit/Committed is fine. I've never had a problem with using it when explaining my past history in which I tried to do so.
Complete sounds strange, like a weird like some have said like a game achievement (I think there might be an achievement like that in an actual game)

And colloqiallyits sounds weird to say if your talking about it or someone else, it sounds weird.. Like 'oh no she completed suicide' or 'I want to complete suicide'
