Does it surprise you that religious people believe in God or any religion? I'm personally religious and it surprises me that atheists don't believe in a religion (not in a bad way though, more so I can't imagine living without a religion), so I'm wondering if you guys view us similarly?

Also, if you don't mind answering, how do you view religious people? Do you see them as unrealistic or too optimistic? What stereotypes do you have or have you seen with your fellow atheists?

I think they should feel free to praise god and worship him but I don't like those people who try to make you love god it's just wrong to me

Even as a religious person I hate when I see other religious people doing that. Like "maybe if you loved God--". Let people believe what they want to believe I swearrr.

It doesn't surprise me, but I was also raised in a really Christian family. To me religious people are just normal, their beliefs are just that, what they believe in. However, when people start to use their beliefs to spread hate towards others that are different from them, that's when my view towards them starts to turn negative.

Most atheists I've met actually grew up in extremely religious families. I was surprised at first but it makes sense when you consider how common it is for parents to push religion onto children as well as hateful ideologies, specifically homophobia or sexism.

I was never raised in a Christian family, however, being Korean-American, my mother always made sure to instill Korean values and traditions in our household. But I don't view religion as a bad thing but when people try to force you with their whole chest to turn into a certain religion, that's what makes me irritated

Yeah my parents used to use religion as a threat of sorts? They'd say stuff like "you have to believe in God and get baptized before you graduate or else etc" stuff like that. But it just never really clicked for me? I didn't feel anything that the people in church always said they felt and i guess I just had a hard time believing in something when there was no evidence of it being real.

I do occasionally get surprised whenever I see someone who is very vocal about their religious beliefs but it’s more in a “I don’t understand half of your allusions and I don’t know how to politely indicate that” way
also, religious schools—I’m hearing stories about them from friends who used to go to those schools and ngl I find some aspects weird and oddly disturbing
I wouldn’t quite call my upbringing atheist though, since we still follow some folk traditions that have their base in multiple gods

personally i have nothing against religious people, i don't see them as unrealistic because everyone is allowed to have their own beliefs and i don't care for that as long as they don't force it on me which sadly is a case in the country where i live. poland is heavily religious and the catholic church here has an impact on things that it shouldn't have like politics, women's rights and how the country views the lgbtq+ community. there were literal hate speeches towards gay people in churches and no one did anything about it, even in my school which claimed to be "open-minded and tolerant" the priest who had a religious education class openly called homosexuality a sin in front of the students. so that's the part of religion that i don't like but as long as your beliefs don't make you judgmental and hateful towards other people i don't mind.

This made laugh a bit ngl. I personally see it as an impure act for myself (like I personally wouldn't do it) but I don't think it makes the person impure. I just don't think someone's purity is based off of that.

I agree, Why should people be discriminated against just because they may be bi, trans, pan, etc. I guess this is the kind of world we live in. sad

I agree with this. People need to understand that at the end of the day, not one thing a person does defines them. And even if it DID define them- it's none of your concern what they do anyway. We've gotta stop defining people by things like this.

Yupp, I'm straight and it really saddens me to see that people are getting so much hate for this. Hopefully things change tbh, things are already starting to change.

I don't personally believe in god but I don't hate on people that do unless they are extremists. (You know like, those religious parents that send their gay kids to special Christianity camps to pray the gay away, conversion therapy etc. or the ones that simply try to push God onto you in the most annoying ways, and so on)

I see religion or god as someone you could hold onto in times or worry, vent to him, to let him console you, basically have him as a support in your life, same with religion and it's community. Like a shoulder to cry on.
I know it's like a thing to say "don't use his name in vain" or something, but even as a Atheist I'm used to saying "oh my god" or "jesus" and can't help myself not to x).

What I really don't understand though is that some pray/say thanks to god for curing a relative of cancer or w/e but like, that were the doctors that did that, god had like no hand in that unless u mean it in a "thank you for creating this world thus creating doctors and medicine and ways to cure cancer" but that feels like stretch so idk?

This is exactly what we mean! Or even "thank you for giving this doctor the ability to xxx" because we believe that no one is given anything without God, whether it be ability, talent, knowledge, etc. That isn't to discredit the doctors though, ofc.

so its like thanking the doctors through god, but i feel like they should still be appreciative to the doctor in front of them, or at least how it is depicted on tv most of the times it's just thanking god but not the actual present people that did do the work if you get what i mean?
