Gaming/Viewer Fatigue is when you experience disinterest in playing a game or gaming in general. Similarly, I have experienced a phenomenon when binge watching where I will often start watching something only to get tired of it a couple seasons in [not due to it being boring, but just because it happens].

If you experience either of these, when coming back to a TV series or video game that you stopped engaging with for a while, do you begin at the beginning [for the sake of remembering stuff] or do you pick up where you left off?

Personally, I have been in the habit of starting anime and tv series over that I lost the urge to continue watching. Same with video games that are excessively long like any JRPG, Skyrim, Witcher, DA:I... However, picking up where I left off is helpful especially when watching shows that have points that are so tedious. I really could not rewatch certain arcs of Pretty Little Liars more than once every five years.

I usually start all over as well. I've been trying to get through Danganronpa V3 for a couple years now but I keep stopping midway through and restarting.

There's an animated 1D fanfic series on YouTube, and last Christmas, I was watching the Christmas special (a twelve-episode miniseries)... and I actually stopped like a third of the way through. lol That really surprised me bc I used to be OBSESSED with that band! (now I'm obsessed with its solo acts lol)

TV watching fatigue:
Buffy the Vampire Slayer n Angel, its spin-off. Also NCIS, kinds sorta too. I love Buffy n Angel but after watching all seasons BUT the last a couple yrs ago on dvd, (from the local library) i wasnt able to borrow s7 of Buffy or s4 n s5 of Angel.I could watch all 7 n 5 seasons now, but i cant bring myself to do so. Either to start at the beginning or pick up where i left off is just too mentally fatiguing to even contemplate before now.

I did power through NCIS on dvd a few yrs ago, but some episodes ard s4/5 or somewhere in those yrs- i rmbr or rather dont rmbr just being on autopilot, n not bothering to pay attention/focus on the tv n just drifted off for minutes at a time.

I watch NCIS on cable tv thereafter/simultaneously so when i caught up i watched it weekly after tat. Still had stretches where i i had to catch up a few or many episodes. After starting to watch LA n NO spinoffs, i think i had to gave up on those after missing too many.

N then there's Arrow, Flash, Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow n Batwoman, after starting from beginning, i stopped watching a few seasons/episodes in; but went bk to watch the multi episode crossovers, but its too mentally fatiguing to pick up after tat. I just put it on hold n watch the new Superman & Lois but its on hiatus for a few weeks, so....

Meanwhile, i just watch FWS, Clarice, LO Organised Crime, Walker, Equalizer n some others, i think. NCIS ofc.

Edit: b4 the new US tv season restarted this yr, i watched The Spanish Princess(but stalled out on episode 6?), n the Crown(stalled on s1e5?) n Queen's Gambit, so gripping-i watched 2 episodes a day n finished it under a week, amonhst others.

I've seen btvs so many times that I can [and often do] watch seasons out of order... Although, I originally watched it out of order [first S4 then 5b then S6 then S3 then S1 &2 and then S7]... but to be fair it had more to do with syndication timeline, cost of dvd, and availability. When I started watching religiously it was like '07 and the dvds were still $59.99 each and buying out of order was a thing for me when I found deals with S3 being $29.99 which led me to being confused about the plot of S3 given that I didn't watch S2 until a while later. lol... Still S3 was still enjoyable even without backstory.

Depends on how long ifve been away from it. With games it kinda just comes flooding back after 10 minutes regardless of length of time so I don't need to start again.
With shows its a 50/50.

I know most of the storyline from watching it in the 90s till 2000s, whenever season 7 was showing in my country. But it was tuf to watch it every week at the right time in those days.

I missed out on episodes/yrs in the time b4 dvds. N Angel wasnt showing on same channel here, i think. So dvds were heaven sent 4 me. Borrowing tho made it harder to watch n rewatch n not having final s7 n s4/5 of Angel sucked. I even bought s7 of buffy on sale a few yrs bk from my local comics shop for like $50 bucks local currency which was major discount(b4 streaming rlly became a thing, or b4 i rlly knew abt it in my marrow). But iv nvr watched it yet. Dvd player dont work now. Lol. But i might stream s7 n s4/5 just cos ur thread made me think of it now.

PS i could nvr watch serialised fiction out of order, tat i can think of now(may be some examples but not long form serial, more like L&O?) Only skipping the middle maybe, for Arrow. Some others. Most major plot points nowadays are recapped/obvious too. But nu Doctor Who i cant get bk into cos i missed out on 12,11 n the last half or more of 10, so im not watching 13(its more tat if i got rlly into it id want to bkwatch n its too much).

The only serialised ones that are really suitable for out of order watching are the monster of the week (motw) shows. But jumping into Once Upon a Time in Season 5 would be hard. My mom wasn't really into OUAT and I tried to start her with the Dark Swan Arc since I really enjoyed that part of the show and... it is tough to do something with that type of show given the amount of backstory is necessary... but others would have had a tougher time with it, given that my family has a long history of watching soaps on and off for years and can adapt to watching something where they learn the premise as they go... For many that is not as easy. lol

I couldnt even finish 1 season of OUAT, not rlly out of disinterest, considering how much i love Cameron from House,(i just googled the actress' name, srry Jennifer Morrison {did anyone know her character's name was actually Allison Cameron? 8 season watched n i just TIL tat after 8 yrs the show is over). But i think the storyline was suffering from Lost syndrome a bit n not tat compelling(chemistry wise imo, not talent wise) a cast. Also was there a split plot where pre-ep1 n current storyline alternated. I nvr got bk into OUAT after abt less than half os s1 watched. Too bad. Many long form series suffered (imo n watching habits contributed) from Lost syndrome. Imo. But Breaking Bad, the Wire n a few other series didnt(or not as badly, or i just powered through to watch the complete series/Better Call Saul im not sure if its one, i stalled on season 3? or 4?). Sometime its not just boredom but too many series, not sure where i stopped at least as far as im concerned.

I can almost recall the plot/story points but not the exact episode/season where i stopped. Eg Orange is the Nrw Black(reluctance to google/,imdb/wikipedia so as not to know future plot/storyline is also contributing factor for more recent/completed series, eg 2 broke girls, s5/6).

Season One is still a season that I haven't visited since first watching it even though I have re-watched various arcs of ouat multiple times. At the end of the season everyone gets their memories back. So if you were to ever want to start again you could like read some episode summaries and then start with season two, because imo things start to get much better in season two onward. Plot lines are grouped into 10 episode blocks and everything in the arc is basically resolved within that 10 episodes. Although, it often happens that the consequences of actions in the prior arc lead to the plot of the next arc, but the major plots are wrapped up in 10 episodes, which makes things more manageable. lol

I dislike reading summaries of shows i dint watch/plan on watching/watched but dint pay enuf attention tho. Robert Carlyle as Rumpelstiltskin, who i just now mistakenly thot wasnt in season 1, seemed more interesting after season 1 from reading/watching random episodes on tv.

All the more interesting characters n plotlines musta opened up after memories came bk n the fans/audience numbers musta been high enuf to last so many seasons. It just took too long/seemed filler to me season 1 tat the masquearade only ended then. They already had long enuf of my attention n time(in s1), tat im putting a low priority to giving them another block of time (potentially 6x20x40mins total, or even 1 episode of season 2)-cos the ratio of reward to investment isnt enuf to make me take the risk, or at least put it at a low priority-below Orange is the new black, stranger things n other shows which im already more invested in. Srry Jennifer Morrison, Jamie Chung n others in tat show n its spinoff.

I pick up where I left off. If I'm lost, I read the summary of the previous episode
