I don't feel like any debut in 2018 really makes sense to start a generation around especially when 2018 was the last good year for digitals with 2019 being the year where things started to go downhill also coinciding with the debuts of TXT and Itzy as well as Enhypen, Treasure and aespa following that in 2020 so apart from some jank reasoning like just not wanting a 2018 group to be compared to the other 3rd generation groups I don't see the logic :dubuthink:

I don’t know what to answer... not really the kind of person who can talk about this lol
Well you also aren't one of those who said about wanting more Kpop threads though so it's fine :sanapray:

i don't know but since it's the general consensus i have to go by it
i guess they think of it like a zillenial, where if you're born in like 98 99 00 etc you're definitely not a millenial but also you're not a Gen Z completely bc you have lived in a time period with limited internet access.
like for me i first saw a touch screen ipod when i was like 7 or 8 but i clearly remember a time period without them

otherwise i think it's funny that the 3rd generation is not even a generation then
it doesn't make as much in the context of kpop which hasn't evolved THAT much

Generations in K-pop shouldn't really be a thing, if you ask me.
There's one aspect of Kpop that makes generations necessary and that reason being why most peoples understanding of the topic is completely off base as it's the industry itself.

For an example if you look at Blackpinks Gaon wins for June 2018 and 2020 you will get vastly different download numbers will Ddu-du Ddu-du having pulled in 666k while How You Like That only pulled in 177k with the songs both being pretty strong chart toppers but nearly 500k difference between them.

There's a reason like this in every generation that goes with the evolution of the industry and coincides with bigger shifts in the industry as the reason behind the changes in stats be it downloads or physicals.

If you take them away then people could theoretically make nonsensical comparisons like The Boys album sales were an achievement for its time however Iz*One, Twice and Blackpink have all beaten it thanks to the massive growth of physicals since.

The weirdest thing about (G)I-dle being in the 4th generation by their standards is Soyeon made her solo debut in 2017 so she's a 3rd generation idol in a 4th generation group with that split.

Kpop is always going through phases that people like to jump at the chance to call a generation like calling the sexy trend generation 2.5 is still one of the dumbest arguments I've seen in this discussion especially since it hinges on all groups from that era being sexy concept when Crayon Pop wasn't at all.
