How and why my home country is seen as racist and homophobic (1 Viewer)

Everybody in Estonia will agree that we as a country are a bit racist and homophobic, but not in a way that most people think.

Estonians don't want refugees here. We also scoff at gay parades and laugh when there are news of some protest. Why?
To put it simple, we dislike everyone who isn't us. The Estonian mindset can easily be summed up as:

The thing is... That isn't unique to gay people and colored people! We distrust everyone we don't know! We don't want a lot of people from any country or race coming here!

That is due to the reason that, It is hard to find a big country near Estonia that we haven't been ruled by. During the Soviet times the goverment spies were everwhere! That lead to Estonians being distrustful and even agressive towards strangers. New people could be anybody, we don't know them.

A white person or a straight person or anyone really will get the same treatment. A lot of people misunderstand us not liking gay people or colored people as us being racist and so on. No, we hate everybody we don't know! That just happens to include all the gay people and colored people aswell!

but on a serious note, yeah, that makes sense. tbh I barely knew anything about estonia before, but this is just nice to know in general, thank you for clearing that up

:D It's a beautiful country! We also love to sing and dance!

Basically I am doing by best to stall from having to write an essay.... This seemed lika a good way to do it!

i think most countries are like that, but it's still a terrible way to look at the world....

I'm having the best day of high school so far because I have no homework today! I finished everything in class for the first time in like FOREVER ugh!

Some are and some aren't. It is mainly countries that have had war or have been ruled by another country in the near history. For example swedish people are extremely friendly and accepting of all people they meet, mostly I would say because they haven't had a war for a long time!

yea that's true. people who have been marginalized in the past are unlikely to be open to other people, no matter who they are. just bc they're still in survival mode. i just don't like that it's like that even now, when for the most part the world is becoming more globalized. im from canada but im ethnically bengali and i hate the attitudes bengali ppl bring to canada towards other ethnicities bc it was so normalized back there. it's just not right.
