The more I find myself having to do peer evaluations in school, the more I get annoyed with having to say to someone who contributed little that 'they did fine'.. How do you say "Your work sucks" in a nice way. At least when I was doing my thesis I was in a cohort with people who put in effort and we would each spend hours critiquing each others quality work.. I'm fine with lying to people in non-academic or institutional manners, but when my lying and saying 'you did fine' means they won't improve.. Am I really being ethical if I don't say 'get it together'? And if I am to say 'get it together' how do I say it in a way that doesn't make me sound like a dick?

Anyway. Your thoughts? Have you ever faced this conundrum?

i'm extremely unhelpful, incoherent, and prone to rambling. i'm so sorry if this is badly put :wimwim:

it's definitely not easy to give a critical and honest opinion about something as sensitive as someone's creation, that i understand :nekosweat: unfortunately, telling someone that their work isn't up to par is the only way for them to improve, as harsh as it sounds. and as an artistic person, i would much rather someone be honest with me than let me believe my work is adequate when it isn't.

i've dealt with this in several contexts, and personally, i always try to take the route of encouraging the person that even if they didn't do a stellar job, if they put in proper effort they will feel so much prouder of the outcome, and accomplished, and that the reward of hard work is worth it. failing at times is natural, but improvement is guaranteed if you commit yourself. i think wording it in a gentle way and saying they still have potential regardless of the crude work (because we all do have potential !!) will lessen the blow considerably.

also, you're not being a d*ck. you stated yourself that you would like to see people improve, which is good-natured :sanapray: it is the ethical thing to do. honesty may hurt, but otherwise people will never better themselves and grow:pandalove:

sorry for writing a terrible whole-*ss essay :haylul:
