I don't listen idol jpop, but so I know just on surface level. I think kpop focuses on talent and train idols to be perfect in the craft. For japanese idols how well you sing and dance seem to be less important and it's more about appeal and energy u give off. Also jpop idols do sexy photoshoots...

I regretted the field i studies for quite a while cause I didn't get into history what i was really interested in. But i think it worked out well in the end :)
