I guess the question is what should we be comparing civilizations periods to? instead of comparing it to "when humans started" maybe compare it to when the concept of people started grouping together as a civilizations started (i don't know when that is) and go from there maybe?

if the issue in question is "beating" then yes that's abuse and illegal and wrong but sometimes a smack a bum not to the level of beating may be appriopriate given the circumstances
