(CNN)Nine people are dead after shooting in Dayton, Ohio, according to police. Dayton Police say the suspect also is dead. Sixteen additional people were injured in the incident.

The incident -- the second mass shooting in less than a day-- took place around 1 a.m. outside on East 5th Street in the Oregon district, a popular downtown area, Dayton Deputy Director and Assistant Chief of the Police Lt. Col. Matt Carper told reporters early Sunday morning.

The suspect, who was shot and killed by responding officers, has not yet been identified, but Carper said the subject fired a "long gun" with multiple rounds.

No officers were injured in the confrontation, Carper said.

Police believe the suspect acted alone and that there is no remaining threat to the community, but the investigation is ongoing, Carper said. The FBI is assisting with the investigation, Carper said. The motive for the shooting was not immediately clear.

Though many people were killed or injured, Carper said that the incident was over quickly, because officers were already patrolling in the vicinity when the gunshots started.

"As bad as this is, it could have been much, much worse, as I think everyone will become aware of here as more information unfolds," Carper said.

Miami Valley Hospital communications department Terrea Little said the hospital received 16 victims from the Dayton shooting. She would not characterize the injuries.

Elizabeth Long, spokeswoman at Kettering Health Network, which operates several Dayton area hospitals including Kettering Medical Center and Grandview Medical Center tells CNN that they are treating multiple victims in the ER from the shooting. She was not able to give specific numbers or specific hospital name of where patients are being treated.

Dayton Police previously said via Twitter that were "investigating an active shooter incident" in the city's Oregon district and asked residents to avoid the area. The Oregon district is a historic neighborhood with many bars and restaurants.

And America says it don't need gun control. I'm all for people owning guns dont' get me wrong, but this is nuts how many times this is happening. People who want to own guns should welcome laws that would hopefully make it harder to keep guns out of unstable hands.
more people were killed in the past 2 days by dui's its just not as sexy.
Yet nations are adding to legal narcotics because they are only as bad as alcohol.

While these make splashy headlines, taking away rights from good people will never stop bad people.

Countries that have strict gun laws have less gun related violence and countries that have strictened their gun laws have seen drops in gun related violence. So although alcohol related violence is awful and should not be brushed off, that doesn't mean that cause people drive under influence people should also own guns (at least without strict screening process). People who want to kill others can do that without guns too, but if the attacker had knife instead of gun the death toll would been lower.

DUI's have always been an issue, especially with how lax the punishments can be at times. You're worse off getting caught with drugs then killing someone DUI in some areas. We, as a society, are not stupid to the out come of drinking and driving but can't fix stupid no matter how much awareness we put out there. Only thing left is putting breathalyzers in cars.

Yeah we are legalizing pot, and some states shrooms. Again drugs have always been there. What we do have is an unaddressed opiod problem which still claims more victims every year.

So you're saying drugs and DUI outtrump the fact we do have a gun problem in this country? The fact this country that boasts the best mental health, but does not have easy access to it is having more nut jobs getting a hold of guns shooting people. These shootings, especially in the last few years, have been on the rise. Again I am not saying take guns away, I am saying make it harder to for guns to be obtained. Require gun safes that kids do not know the combo to. Heck charge parents for neglect for allowing kids to handle guns unattended. Households that contain anyone that is known to be unbalanced should not contain guns.

So basically RESPONSIBLE people, who can prove they are responsible should own guns. Look into how some of these people get guns and/or flaunted guns before they started shooting up the place. Red flags where there well before things happened but somewhere faliure happened. And ot many failures have been happening lately.

The vast majority of gun owners are responsible.
Every single person who was a shooter broke many many laws. I just do not believe adding more laws to the books will do anything other than provide illusionary feelings. Walmart is a gun free zone are are schools and i assume clubs like in Dayton more laws and rules are not the answer. Let alone the language says shall not be infringed, making it harder for law abiding folks to exercise their rights is already infringement.

It continues to astound me that people who rail about abuse of power.
Cheerfully want all useful weapons to only be in government hands.
People go bat shit crazy over states asking for id to vote for pete's sake.

Big brother should not be watching social media to the extent you are suggesting. Even if they were the manpower is just not there to check em all out.

It took over 6 min for A cop to get to Walmart in el paso they are never going to joe blows house.

You do realize a cop showing up within 20 minute marker in america is considered fast. Especially now we do not have as strong of a police for with anti-police movements.

Again it was mentioned countries with gun laws, and/or I'm including mandatory military don't have problems with gun violence. We as Americans think it's a right which is a huge problem. We don't put a value our rights it is why it's going so wrong.

For them to take 6+ to get to a walmart on major streets with cars paroling is shockingly bad.

Dayton seems to have been well under that.
This is to homes too, so anything in the city proper should be faster.

As to mandatory military service aka systemic individual assessment and weapons training... Good luck with that, the countries that do that are Small. Switzerland, Israel even South Korea is at ~ 50 million but they only require males.

Even during the draft not even close to everyone served in the US. As an aside the VE did not see anywhere close to this maybe ending the draft was a bad idea ... :) Its been close to 3 generations since there was any sort of draft in the US.

This is just heartbreaking. When are going to realize that things need to change?

My condolences go out to the victims and their families.

Yeah
The shooting, and my school, are in the heart of downtown Dayton
My family lives well on the outskirts of town.
They didn't even know about, I woke them up when I called them
