Some background: I have heard one song from this album already, the title track, but I really truly remember nothing about it. Maybe that means I wont rate it well, but it also means that for all these songs it is essentially my first time listening to them. Lets get started
Hey. Babe. Like It
Throughout the whole songs, the vocals were in a very high range. The only parts that weren't in a falsetto was the rap parts and the instrumental. It is also a very vocally driven song, the instrumental is almost always in the background and barely noticeable. The rap portions were pretty short, and while they were lower, the tended to have vocals overlaying it to the point it still had the same feel. They did an okay job at changing the song up just a bit though. Overall this whole song did stay very constant. The instrumental remained the same, the range stayed the same, and overall mood ofthe song was absolutely the same. This has both its drawbacks and benefits. For people who enjoy very soft and high voices, this would likely make a good song for a scenario where you would like consistency, such as drawing or reading quietly. I personally do not enjoy the vocals at all, and I enjoy songs that have a lot of evolution throughout so I did not enjoy it at all, however for its niche target I do think it was fine. 4/10
Violeta
This song is much more typical of a kpop song. The instrumental beginning still keeps with the more charming theme of this album, although it isnt as high as in the first song. The vocals also tend towards the higher range, but they do expand it somewhat by not having it in falsetto. They also add more high notes, which does make the range wider, and the singer in charge does them well. The chorus is also a pretty typical chorus used, having it be almost exclusively instrumental with some vocal flavoring. Songs such as these tend to get old more quickly in my opinion, just because there is less happening, particularly with an instrumental like this one, which is also higher. The most refreshing parts are the prechorus, when the instrumental does get significantly lower. The bridge is also very typical of kpop, often songs will slow it down for variety, but the last things this song really needed was a slower bit. The high notes are also very difficult to notice in this song due to the fact that they are already high pitched, I think that they should have just saved their voices in this case to be completely honest. It has very little variety, a low repeatibility factor, and overall I just think this is not a good title track to put out. 4.5/10
Highlight
This song starts off with a nice charming instrumental, quite similar in mood to their previous songs. The vocals start off very nicely, they definitely have a wider range than their previous songs, but they sound very pleasant together. This song does also have more variety, right from the first prechorus, the instrumental and vocals make a change. The chorus is like in Violeta, very instrumental based and from my opinion not very repeatable. However, this instrumental is catchier and more pleasant to listen too than the previous song. Also like before the bridge is a very typical kpop bridge, but in this case it also works better because it changes the tempo of the song, unlike before. I was also plesantly surprised by the last chorus, I was worried that they would try to insert high notes again but instead they modified the chorus and it achieved the same effect, added more variety, and was a fairly unique way to do so. Overall this song was really strong, Im definitely adding it to my playlist. 7/10
Really Like You
Okay so I'm high key shook, I thought that if you combined girl groups and ballads I would hate it but this is somehow amazing? It starts off sounding like it would be a pretty typical girl group ballad and in a lot of ways it is. The difference would be the vocals are wispier, very reminiscent of Oh My Girl, and the chorus is stronger than the rest. The instrumental is also really fitting, the guitar really suits the song well. The high notes in this song did actually suit the song quite well, they were quiet enough that they didnt sound out of place but loud enough that they were noticeable. Overall it was a mellow, sweet ballad done well. 8.5/10
Airplane
This song was definitely one of the more upbeat songs I've heard so far. The instrumental was good throughout, and did well in balancing the vocals. The only part I feel like it didnt was for the chorus, which was high. It was off putting because the rest of the song was lower, and on top of that the prechorus definitely made it seem that it would be more intense. The chorus itself was also very high pitched, and I felt that it didnt match the song well. I thought it would have gone better in another song, and they could have made the chorus for this one different and more intense. The rapping wasn't anything attention grabbing either, although I did notice and dislike the autotune for that part. Throughout the whole song I mostly felt underwhelmed, but the very ending did get me, the girls voice was beautiful and a nice change from the chorus. 5.5/10
Up
This song is another more upbeat one. The instrumental especially was fast paced and very catchy. Along with that, the verses had more variety than in previous songs, though they did have a small range again. The instrumental was definitely very prominent and necessary because while the vocals were fine, they played a very large part in balancing and in leading the chorus. One part that did throw me off a little is the strain on the last part for the high notes, I do understand they were trying to make it different and more climactic, but the strain doesn't make it as pleasant. Honestly another pretty good song that will probably go on my playlist. 7.5/10
Overall
My opinion of this group hasnt changed much, although I do have more faith in their ability to release songs I enjoy. Some of the tracks were big misses, but there were also some big hits I wasn't expecting. I dont think I would ever be a fan of this group because the vocals personally are not my type, but I understand the appeal and wish them all the best.
