Alexander Graham Bell was influential in an area you may not expect, schooling for deaf students. He was a strong proponent of what he called oralism, where deaf students would be taught to integrate into “the hearing world” by learning lip reading and speaking, while discouraging or actively preventing the students from learning any form of sign language. For decades, deaf people couldn’t learn sign language in school. Unsurprisingly, even the most successful deaf oralists struggled to follow human conversations for a large variety of reasons.

did this guy know languages other than english exist if i were to lip read someone talking about suho from exo while only knowing polish i'd think they were complaining about something being dry since it's the same word here

He did, he spoke some other languages. But I think that if he wasn’t put off by the fact that deaf Americans wouldn’t understand most of the English conversations around them, he probably wasn’t too bothered about other languages
