Americans of KS, what confuses or do you have a question about concerning Europe? (1 Viewer)

My mom has work in a predominantly German part of Switzerland and so she’s learning German but some other parts are apparently predominantly French? In Canada, you usually just know English or French, maybe the two and that’s about it.

Same thing in Switzerland. German and French are majorities, third one being Italian but it's very minor comparing to the two.

No need to keep track of all languages, you need to know your own language in your own country and perhaps English and German. If you know some of that, you're golden anywhere in Europe.

How do y’all keep track of all those languages?

Well who said we do XD

There are way too many languages spoken here but luckily you can find some common elements with other languages. Eg Latin is the mother language of English, Spanish, Italian, French etc etc. You can definitely find many common elements in them, especially in Spanish and Italian for me (might be cause I've actually studied Latin during school that I find them similar but whatever XD).

Also, something very helpful for me is that the Mediterranean languages got many common things. For example, my mom went to Spain for 2 weeks without knowing any word and in 2 weeks she could easily understand Spanish people mainly cause of our similarities

does your school teach you other languages at a young age or do you get the option to pick languages in high school? because that's how it is over here in the states and tbh it doesn't rlly help you learn the language unless you really get into it.

I was taught Croatian (my mother tongue) for 12 years, English for 10 years, German for 8 years and Latin for 4 years.
That is the standard set of languages if you end up going to grammar school. You can opt for Italian or French instead of German in some schools.

If you opt for a vocational school it will be more or less than that, but you will always have at least English.

Wow thats crazy, in america you pick a language in middle school and you take one class everyday and learn about it. but tbh its not rlly effective unless you stick with the same language all throughout middle school and high school.

yeah and its surprising since america is probably one of the most diverse countries in the world with all types of people and different backrounds. it would be so helpful to know a second language...

that's true... it's way easier when you are young and you know it's something important
and for real, i fid it important to know other languages because you don't where you'll live in the future or at least visit

and btw i had some years of latin as well (4 i think) but it was awful so I don't know latin at all
