Till recently I myself also didn't understand this since to me it seemed like before the groups that debut were mostly nugus with almost nothing to push them further and they'd just end up in the gutter next to the more popular groups that weren't slowing down.
While now, we have a multiple factors coming together to push it all.
1) Companies take a long time usually to debut groups so some of the groups started developing as BTS started getting popular and are only now coming out
2) A lot of current bg's are Wanna One/X1 members, and the other people around them. And these people make sales high, pretty easily.
3) Downfall of popular bg's - B1A4, iKON, BTOB, SHINee, SUJU, BAP, Block B, EXO, Highlight... all of these groups are either, disbanded, have members in the army or release music so rarely you periodically forget they exist anymore. That leaves a lot of room for people that are specifically interested in boy groups to grow and get fans. Especially through similar music like the styles that have been used regularly.
4) I recently went through most active, known boy groups currently. And I kid you not, maybe 2 of them had sales under 100k and their sales were 80K or smn like that. Most of them didn't start off with these sales but over time grew to these heights, which is truly fascinating to me honestly since before, barely any group had good enough sales to stay afloat.
5) Int fans actually matter now, there are so many overseas fans that having any interest internationally can significantly boost your groups status. ATEEZ and A.C.E. being the biggest benefactors imo.
There's other stuff but I just wanted to state a few that i noticed recently.
