I think it’s because exo is 2nd gen. So most of their fans are around their 30s now. So they stop focussing on kpop, and more on their lives. The newer kpop fans are so young nowadays, they also only stan the newer groups.
I’m not saying all of the fans stop focussing on kpop tho, cuz obviously there are older fans too.

it doesn't help that the peak of exo came when kpop was barely selling 1 million albums for the biggest acts...

Yea exactly.. that too. Kpop became much bigger in the recent years. So obviously the groups that are big now, like seventeen, sell a lot more.

to be entirely fair they peaked during a time that was dominated by 2nd gen groups (2013-2015)

What second gen groups were dominating the industry other than maybe Shinee and Big Bang? I always thought that time was mostly dominated by 3rd gen groups, with only really the top second gen groups making it :dubuthink:

1st tier was basically : exo big bang Shinee but 2nd tier you had :
Block B, B1a4, Suju, VIXX, infinite, Beast, Cnblue
And others like teen top, 2pm being quite big too.

Where does BAP fall on this list? Pre lawsuit. Because I don’t think CNBlue was bigger than BAP from what I’ve heard, let alone teen top or 2pm. They were competing with Exo at the start. Plus EXID were pretty big after the Up and Down fancam no? And while it’s the later end of the range, BTS did gain more fame in 2015 and they weren’t at the top but also weren’t tiny at debut. I dont know much about BTOB but I can’t imagine they were more nugu than some of the ones on this list, not in Korea at least. So yeah, I do think the 2nd gen ones could count as big at that time but the list seems to be kind of lacking in which 3rd gen’s are counted as big.

Forgot to write BAP but I consider VIXX, block B and B1a4 2nd gen so. I didn't put GG but yeah SNSD, AoA, Apink, Exid were all pretty big 2nd gen groups. BTS was in 2015 imo the transition to 3rd gen dominating with seventeen coming along too. BTOB really was quite small in the first few years, they really got big in 2016/2017, quite unusual for kpop groups lol. Nuest have the same story but even more incredible. Cnblue was unexpectedly bug, they dominated charts and their sales were comparable to the likes of Block B etc...

Oh ngl I don’t think we’ll be able to make a comparison because for me 2nd gen ended in 2011 :haylul: So lots of the groups we’re comparing will match up. Though Nuests story isn’t small to big like BTOBs is to you (though wasn’t BTOBs debut big ish?) since Nuest had a big debut and comeback at minimum before their major concept change and push to other countries over Korea. So it was more big small big again.

Nuest début was a little viral but they didn't have a big fan base so hard to really say how big it was. Before Produce they had nugu numbers but then instantly became tier 2 lol. BtoB was on the edge for while and then just became super big with missing you.
