Challenger being a space ship that exploded on January 28, 1986. I know the age range of KS doesn’t really lend itself well to that, but I know that a lot of school children in the US at least saw it live. I was curious if any of the older users did actually remember seeing that

But it's crazy that it feels really long ago, but is still close enough in time that lots of people were old enough to have seen it live on TV and still have that memory with them.

I asked my parents about the Satanic Panic of the 1980s once, because I was reading a fictionalized book about it, and disappointingly, they didn't remember ANYTHING. Which was wild to me?? It'd be like someone asking me in 15 years what COVID was like. It's crazy how many people go through life not really registering anything outside of themselves.

I think I can understand your parents tho. With covid, It will definitely be a different memory for someone who suffered the symptoms or lost someone to it. I was fortune enough to just be confined at home and some financial issues but other than it, it feels like a distant dream.
If you ask about 9/11 most of my extended fam lived across the country and will tell you it feels the same, like a distant dream. My immediate fam and I lived just across the river and it's still a very distinct memory. Every year when the anniversary comes around it's still weird here, while my extended fam dont have the same feeling about it.

Covid was just too big. The measures too draconian. The world will be the better part of this decade and maybe the next recovering from the unintended side effects of all the decisions.

Table top gaming is at least as effective as reading in many critical thinking and imagination development areas. There is a reason disproportionately large numbers of Stem type people( particularly in code) played table top or read sci fi fantasy.

Not to derail Vikki's thread, but I know she likes weird history things so... my big question for them was, like, by the early 90s, people knew the Satanic Panic was nonsense. But there were actual trials and daycare centers were closed down, people were villainized for playing D&D, etc. Was there any kind of formal reconcilliation/recognition that that was wrong? Or was it just "welp, that was messed up, nbd that your life was ruined for a decade there, moving on"? Wikipedia only covers the freak out in the 80s itself, but not really the aftermath (beyond the impact it had on the psychotherapy profession).

Neither of my parents really talked about 9/11 much, though I know it stressed my mom out because my dad worked in NYC and passed right by the twin towers on his commute so she didn’t know if he could have been in any danger. But that’s still different than living so close to where it happened now, and he wasn’t even close when it happened
