i-land was hybe (company) and mnet (the tv channel they partnered with), with the group being managed by belift. r u next will see hybe partnering with jtbc, but the group will still debut under belift (i'm guessing that's the survival show label now 😭)

yeah though i don't think it'll follow the same system as i-land as they insisted that they are two different shows
it'll be interesting to see if they are trainees from previous groups or survival shows

admittedly, i'm not a big fan of survival shows. i mean, i did follow boys planet very intently (got sucked in cause i like hui, ended up getting attached to a whole bunch of the contestants) - and ngl i regret that. i didn't watch the episodes because they were too long-drawn and the evil edits (and angel edits too, ngl) were insufferable. editing - positive or negative - is part and parcel of reality tv in general (though one could argue mnet's is worse, and i'll say it's def worse than jtbc's), and it's scary how with a few cuts, a bit of background music, and their own subtitles and comments, they can change the narrative surrounding one innocent person.

additionally, the environment of a show like this can be horrible. mentally, it can give a lot of stress to the contestants. for example, pentagon were formed on a survival show, pentagon maker, on which 3 contestants (dawn, shinwon and yanan) were eliminated, only to debut w ptg later. the members have explicitly told new fans not to watch the show because of how stressful it was for them. physically too, it can be horrible - look at idol school. the contestants who gained weight were forced to eat only one piece of a food item in a day. some contestants got rashes on their skin. there was no way for them to tell if it was day or night. some contestants didn't get their periods for the entire duration of the show, others menstruated non-stop. absolutely sickening.

that said, there are a few things i like about survival shows, ngl. you're introduced to a whole bunch of contestants that you eventually end up liking and looking out for, whether they debut or not. take boys planet. i like all 9 members of zb1, and am highly anticipating their debut. and there's a whole bunch of contestants who got eliminated, who i adore and still keep an eye out for. the debuted idols who participated ended up getting people into their groups (while i already was interested, bp was the final push for me to actively start stanning nine.i).

that said, for me the negatives largely outweigh the positives. so i won't follow r u next, UNLESS an idol/trainee i like is participating. then i'll read and watch recaps here and there, and watch their performances (what i plan to do with queendom puzzle as an ujung and someone who casually likes a lot of the participants). that's it.

labels are not really good at managing their survival shows even years after starting to do them... a bunch of these problems would be easily solved if they just cared a bit and that's just sad

Actually, I think it's the opposite. The k-pop industry in general is very good at manipulation and social engineering.

yeah i'm actually inclined to agree with @DarthPandaScare here. it all depends on what one sees as "good" and as "problems". the kpop industry in general is highly manipulative, true - cause that's what's good for them. to manipulate millions of people to tune into a tv show, root for their faves and shit on their non-faves will generate them tons of profit. and at the end of the day, all they care about is the $$$, right? if they saw the literal human rights abuse going on in their tv shows as a problem, they'd have fixed it by now. alas, they don't. cause the fans are not the only people they manipulate - the trainees/idols too are victims.

not really. the last hybe show I watched was island and I stopped watching after 3 episodes because hell that show was fucked up.
my only thought about it was 'hopefully they get psychological treatment afterwards, hybe is fucking their mind so hard'.

I have a hard and fast rule that i never watch nor support label only Survival shows or the groups that come from them.

To the point i also view any other group from said agencies as suspect.

IF the agency 'owns' teh trainees pick a $#@# and run with it,.

And i actually watch the shows over. well except idol school that thing is a train wreck horribly subbed and directly manipulated thru every epp.
