The revised bill prohibits broadcasters from casting celebrities with criminal records related to drugs, sexual assault, drinking under the influence, and gambling that has led to confinement, imprisonment, or capital punishment."

I really hope this doesn't pass. After you have gone through your sentence and punishment, it is really important that those who have committed crimes are able to return to society. This makes it impossible for many. Also, lot of the crimes mentioned like drugs and gambling aren't crimes that have hurted others, just the person so instead of punishment persons with drug or gambling addiction needs professional help and rehabilitation.

This could also affect quite many kpop idols and singers who have done sth criminal in the past, but are now promoting and have moved past that.

I can definitely understand it for more serious stuff, but even then I think it shouldn't really be law.. Tv stations have enough sense already to not cast anyone who has committed serious crimes and there is always public backlash.

I don't think it's about masking the bad and more about not promoting those who people could be influenced by to do these things.

As for the actual law if all of these are related to confinement, imprisonment or capitol punishment then it's just for those who go to jail which let's be real, if an idol gets any of these they'd be done.

I agree with the law if it just took off people with serious crimes, but I don't agree with doing it to someone who commits a small crime like smoking weed or something like that. it genuinely depends on what crimes they're talking about.

The problem is that we see drugs as a small crime but they carefully picked out these crimes to blacklist people for. Someone won't be able to appear on TV if they got a sentence for smoking weed but if they steal a car or beat up a police officer they could go on TV just fine and I think that part is very telling of how people think about these issues.

yeah that definitely sucks. I've grown up in America my whole life so I basically grew up thinking that weed isn't a big deal because i see celebrities doing all the time. I mean one of snoop dogs biggest songs is literally about smoking weed. it seems to me that whoever made this law doesn't actually care about whether or not the korean gp would pick up on what's on tv because like you said someone wouldn't be able to appear if they smoked weed because weed is portrayed so bad over there but someone who beats someone up would be able to come on tv just fine.

True. There are some idols who were involved in juvenile criminal activities prior to becoming idols.. Be funny if this was done in United States though. The box office would be destroyed from lack of promotion

I'm actually not against this idea although the severity of the crime really matters in my opinion. If it's something small that doesn't hurt anyone besides the idol themselves (like drugs) then I think after they have been punished by the law, they should be able to continue on with their lives. But for any other crime, I like this. Especially considering that majority of the audience for idols are kids/teens so they're literal role models for so many of the younger population. It sucks that many commit huge crimes only to go back on to TV after a short "reflection" period and receive love from many. It sends the wrong message so I'm not against this idea at all.

Each time I get even more surprised by how manipulative korean politicians are. It seems as if all their issues as society are going to be solved by punishing idols to the extreme. Do they understand that the actual situation of kpop industry esp. idols involvement in drugs, suicide and other issues is because they're part of a corrupt system, in which idols are just the replaceable parts? They do not commit crimes just because they're idols but because others around them do it as well. They're not living in Mars, they live in SK.
This proposal is straight discriminatory, it's meant to punish people even after they already went through the justice system. While a private citizen can, at least in theory, recover all its rights after being judged and sentenced without any further issue, an idol will be punished forever by depriving them to work normally in what they do best, no matter if they showed remorse or if they have proven to be reformed.
I'm telling you, those politicians will come up with everything as long as they don't have to deal with the actual problems... yikes!
