In 1931, Churchill was on a visit to the US when he was hit by a car, receiving a variety of injuries. After this accident, the doctor prescribed alcohol for Churchill. At this time, the US was going through prohibition, meaning that it was usually illegal to purchase alcohol. However, the doctors orders meant that Churchill could have unlimited alcohol while in the US. The doctors orders gave no maximum amount, but it did specify that he needed a minimum of 250 cubic cm/just over 8 oz a day.
