Announcement Clarification about the English language rule (1 Viewer)

This post concerns our rule about using languages other than English. The rule states:


English Only: Please write all posts and threads in English. Short phrases in other languages are permitted.


We’ve noticed that some users post titles for new songs, variety shows, performances, etc., almost entirely in Korean. This can make it difficult for others to understand the content without clicking into the thread and watching the video. In these cases, we ask that you include enough information in English in the thread title to make it clear to everyone. You can keep the Korean part if you'd like, but please add the same content in English as well. Thank you for your understanding! We'll continue offering reminders as everyone gets used to this guideline.

Only question I have about this is what in the scenario that you can't find the English version of the title as Google Translate might not be accurate but for more niche artists ones like Bugs will only use Korean sometimes and only it is very rare I have had a hard time getting one or two to show up on Google for the English translation.

If that becomes an issue, it’s okay if the title isn’t a perfect translation of the name, but still provides a clear description of what the content is. For example, if they’re on a variety show about food, and the title is something like foodies love food, it’s okay to not translate that title perfectly if you can’t, but rather to add English to the title of the thread saying something like “Bugs food variety show”. That way, it’s still descriptive enough for users to understand what the content is, even without the exact Korean translated title.

Appreciate this. There have been times I've searched to see if a particular video or whatever was already shared, not found anything, and then realized afterwards that it was posted, just entirely in Korean.

According to this rule, I should translate music video titles? And everything else too, if it’s not English?
Since I don’t speak the mentioned languages, I can only use a translator and nobody will verify to me if it’s accurate or I post nonsense in English.

If you can, that would be best because a lot of other people on the site also don’t know those languages at all. If you aren’t sure, you could try with a translator of some kind, or depending on what it is you could use a short description of the content, like if it’s an MV, performance, variety, ect and the theme if relevant, like a variety show focused on food, travel, ect. The problem with only having it in the native language is that it makes it difficult for people to quickly see what it is without entering the thread and checking, which can be especially difficult if they want to avoid duplicates, as they may need to check every thread in any relevant section in that time range with a fully foreign title, so if even the basics can be translated that would be helpful to users overall

At the worst, I think google translator sometimes gives the romanization for korean words, so if it happens to be a name, it would work.

I welcome this change! I always thought it's not good when people just copy korean titles, even though almost no one here can understand it

I approve of this change wholeheartedly! I don't know a lick of Korean, Japanese, Chinese, or Thai and therefore can't read the symbols, and it's frustrating when I see a title in one of those languages and have to click, only to realize I don't even listen to the artist mentioned.
