I do kind of wonder. Outside of the big four -- whose groups quite frankly have no reason to ever fail to be successful -- as long as the company is trying, getting them gigs, giving them good songs, etc. it does seem like a significant chunk is up to luck.

Although, it also seems like, these days, there are fewer mid tier groups. It seems to largely be monster groups and then everyone else. I think second gen had more stratification. Like 2NE1 and SNSD were clearly the most successful, but Secret, KARA, T-ara, f(x), Sistar, etc. all had their own sizeable fanbases and were still able to chart really well with good songs.
