Whether in a book or a movie or show?

If so who or what was it?

For me, personally-I ALWAYS hated Gale and ALWAYS loved Peeta.
I don't know what was the popular ship before the movies but the second the movies were released
everyone and their mom LOVED Gale because of who was playing him.
But honestly, I LOATHE him as a character and always thought Peeta was about ten times better than him.

I think shipping in general is weird.

Like why would I care if 2 fictional characters are giving each other an STD's or not.

Especially with actors. I could not care less who banged who it's their lives let them live it.

No I'm invested in the story, but I like a story to be more nuanced than the main climax to be sex

I enjoy stories where the characters face great moral dilema and are forced to choose either end of themselves. I do not care who they swap siliva with in the process of finding their own self.

If they pick up a lover in the process it's only natural really, but I can't really find myself caring for those love scenes

Shipping doesn’t mean you want to think deep and hard about who’s sticking their penis into whom or whatever combination of genitalia there can be, nor does it mean that if you ship 2 characters you want the story to be exclusively about their relationship and want everything else chucked out of the window. Shipping people without wanting to think or care about their sex life is fine and tbh not abnormal at all, and shipping people doesn’t make you think the rest of the story irrelevant because of its lack of sex. I think your idea of what shipping truly is is just kind of incomplete and lacking.

Shipping doesn’t mean you want to think deep and hard about who’s sticking their penis into whom or whatever combination of genitalia there can be, nor does it mean that if you ship 2 characters you want the story to be exclusively about their relationship and want everything else chucked out of the window. Shipping people without wanting to think or care about their sex life is fine and tbh not abnormal at all, and shipping people doesn’t make you think the rest of the story irrelevant because of its lack of sex. I think your idea of what shipping truly is is just kind of incomplete and lacking.
