Apparently there is a word for each letter. I thought we were just saying random words that start with those letters ​

Just a small correction: It's not every word for every letter, it's every word as a specific sound. The alphabet is used as a format of transcribing any word no matter what language. It's very useful for Opera singers, speech therapists, linguists, etc. Love it with all my heart.

I think she means the NATO phonetic alphabet or a similar version, not the International Phonetic Alphabet you’re referring to. In the NATO Phonetic Alphabet each letter does indeed have a word.

Ngl before this I had also only heard of the IPA, but I decided to google it to see if there was one matching your description, and if I was right I think the IPA is more famous so people might think you mean that one

IPA is used as a pronunciation guide between languages, you’ve probably seen it after words in dictionaries and such but just never known it’s the phonetic alphabet
