Only reach Infinite level of success? Which is still really good cause Infinite was pretty big but they were no where near the biggest.

BTS would never win one music show against SuJu, BigBang or SHINee, or 2PM OR Girls Generation. They would not blow up in the West either cause it wasn't the right time. Timing is everything in kpop especially and if the biggest 2nd gen groups weren't a blip on the radar back then then BTS wouldn't be either.

The biggest album sales rarely surpassed 500k so that means BTS wouldn't even crack 3 million in their whole career.

It really puts into perspective how much 2nd gen did worldwide for 3rd gen to immediately come in and take over the world with very little effort. Because when Wonder Girls and SNSD went west nobody in the west cared. If BTS went West in 2010 it would have been the same outcome.

Just something to ponder when you look at todays kpop landscape.

and yet it was Gangnam style who made kpop popular and neither Shinee, BigBang or any others.

sure there had always been enthusiasts who already knew about kpop, but it was 2012 and everyone making parodies to Gangnam style when kpop started to really creep into the international music charts.

Why do you always feel the need to put down everything that isn’t 2nd gen especially BTS & 4G groups just to bring it up and make it seem like 2G is the Jesus of kpop? It’s getting old.

New fans come to kpop every day and just assume kpop has always been this big. But it took 2 decades and a TON of groups to get it where it is today.

And where we are today is a time when brand new groups can sell 300k with their first album. That didn't happen overnight.

And it almost seems racist to me that Gangnam Style was 90% of people introduction to kpop. Not a timeless ballad or a fun energetic dance number but a racist stereotype of the big goofy asian man who dances like a loonatic. That alone proves NO ONE was gonna break into the west without this type of concept because it's the only way to get Americans attention if your asian (besides being Jackie Chan).

Only then after kpop has the west attention can they then say "look this is what else we have to offer besides the cheesy".

Love PSY and what he did was genius but it wasn't talent or music it was shock value that made kpop blow up in America.

@Drew_B Umm... Just let me say this. BTS, for me, will never reach the success that Infinite has in the little world I have built in my head... BTS is like St. Paul. He is important, but is not the pope (St. Peter) or the Messiah. This is my opinion at least. Apart from that, I knew Gangnam Style when it came out, but I did not like the song at all.

it's the only way to get Americans attention if your asian
The way to get people's attention on Asian Media is to introduce them to anime as children. Anime, in my opinion, will far exceed the success of BTS/BP. K-Pop in the west is looked at as feminine and cheesy. Think about it, two straight men in a room, one says he likes anime and the other k-pop. Who's going to get made fun of the most? :hyungwontea: And depending on the concept that can be true. But an entire generation of boys was raised on 4kidz and I read something that 10 percent of the US population likes anime. Is it true? Probably not since I can't find any verifiable data source, but the fact that it has such a claim proves its relevence in the west. But I digress.
