Eating something in the store before you paid (1 Viewer)

say you grab a cookie from the shelf and eat it in the store, but you save the wrapper so you can pay for it at checkout

do you think that's okay? have you ever done it or can you see yourself doing it?

Googled it and its not allowed in here for hygienic and safety reasons that merchandise won't be opened before paying and outside the store
For health reasons like diabetes and to prevent little kids getting fits because of hunger it is allowed

I struggle to see how that's okay unless you're literally dying (which most people are not generally dying at the grocery store from my experience). Besides, what happens when your card gets declined or you forgot your wallet or whatever? Are you going to throw the cookie back up or something?

no. i remember being told off by my dad for doing that as a little kid, so i learnt not to do that.

tbh im kind of neutral about it, i would never do it myself but as long as you're sure you can pay for it and have the intention to pay, and the store doesnt have a policy against it, i guess..? on the other hand im like, you really can't wait 5 minutes to pay and eat it outside? i've heard some people grab something off the shelf when they're low on sugar, so i can totally see that happening though

Well yes but the intention to pay isn't the same as knowing you'll be able to, I think in all cases there is a chance, a small one but a chance, that whatever you'll be using to pay will go wrong. The only time you can be certain is once you've paid. In my view I don't own what I am eating, even if I intend to, until I have paid and it's at best rude to use something you don't own in a store imo. And yeah like I said, if it's a medical question, that I can get. But I don't think that that truly happens all that often. But in that case I think they're excused, but that's a special situation and I would wager a guess that many people who eat food in stores are not suffering medically to that level.

personally, if i havent paid for the food, it hasnt been sold to me and thus, isn't mine yet so i wouldnt consume it before paying for it. i do see people eating before paying and i have no opinion on them as long as they remember to pay tbh

Well yes but the intention to pay isn't the same as knowing you'll be able to, I think in all cases there is a chance, a small one but a chance, that whatever you'll be using to pay will go wrong. my family always carries cash and multiple cards, so i was thinking payment security in that sense. assuming you take a bite out of something that's like a dollar or two only, obviously. idk, maybe im not too bothered about it because growing up my dad would always drink a water or redbull and no one ever said anything or even looked at him weird. he's super honest about that kind of stuff also.
again, it's not something i would personally do, and im thinking you probably lack self control if you cant wait a few minutes to pay and eat/drink, but i do think intent counts. maybe im just a little naive in that way, but imo if you put an empty bottle in your cart with all your other items and explain at the register thats very different from eating produce that has to be weighed, or drinking a soda and leaving the empty bottle in the shelf idk

I saw people do it as a child, but I never did it myself. I think it's tolerable, certainly not as bad as other things you could be doing in a store and better than outright stealing, but I don't see myself ever encouraging that behavior.

Eating produce would be a major problem on your side too given they're not exactly washed and sanitary really
I guess if you do carry multiple forms of payment your chances would be really slim. I'm in the habit of carrying just one main form and maybe cash (big maybe), so I tend to forget some people probably have many forms. And yeah being honest about it is ofc better. I really just don't see the point mainly, there's no reason to eat it at the store unless you're medically suffering. It can wait and it's always safer and just better to imo.
