Nowadays, a black swan is used as a metaphor for something that is seemingly impossible, but that in reality is just very rare. But prior to the late 1600s, Europeans actually thought that black swans didn’t exist. At this point, black swans were used for a metaphor for something that was laughably impossible or that couldn’t exist. This began to shift after 1697, when Dutch explorers found black swans in Western Australia. This is why the meaning started to mean something that seems impossible but is in reality just very rare.

This reminds me of Magpie's, apparently Australian Magpie's are only called thus because settlers thought they looked the same as Eurasian Magpie's but the two species are entirerely unrelated.

Yeah same happened with possums, explorers in Australia thought the Australian animal a sounded like the description of opossums in the US and named them possum. But they’re completely different species. And tbh they don’t even look alike in reality
