The city of Phoenix, located in Arizona, USA, has a pretty distinctive name. But where does it come from?

When Europeans arrived to where modern day Phoenix is, some noticed that aside from the issue of no water, it wasn’t a bad place for agriculture. They weren’t the first to think so. The area had been settled before by Hohokam natives for over 1,000 years, before vanishing around 1450 for unknown reasons. But they also needed a way to get water for farming as well. What they did is they built canals for this purpose. While the canals weren’t bringing water in anymore, the Europeans saw the remnants of these canal systems, which reached over 135 miles/217 km. They decided to use and expand upon the old canals, which gave them a huge head start that allowed them to found the city of Phoenix. The connection to the name is the trait of a rebirth a phoenix has. It was supposed to symbolize a new start from the ashes of a previous civilization, like the rebirth of a phoenix.

also couldn't be that a phoenix would feel perfectly at home in the summer....

i was here when it was 122 in June. the airport regularly gets too hot to fly some types of planes.

The surrounding cites were very farm based into the 80's/90's ya can still get a feel for what it was like on some of the local reservations.
there were citrus groves for miles.

It does help, but it’s not the reason given for the city name And it’s a bit more unique, given that a lot of hot places exist, so it’s not as special probably
