So since this is a topic most people get confused about I figured that I would try explaining it in as least of a confusing way as possible but if you have questions after then feel free to ask
First thing is that while you may see a lot of people throw their own take on due to thinking it's about a group debuting or trends this has flaws though with the accepted generations (1992-2002, 2003-2011, 2012-20??) like TVXQ, Super Junior and SHINee are all 1 generation. Trends on the other hand even if you start in 2014 that was the year Something and Up & Down came out and for 2015 Shake It and Heart Attack all being big sexy hits before it went to cute and now it's girl crush.
A generation can be defined by the state of kpop at that point in time and how it affects success for groups which now i'm gonna explain them.
1st Generation - This one is the easiest as it started with Seo Taiji and Boys in 1992 since they are the group that brought about kpops style followed up by H.O.T and S.E.S debuting in 1996 and 7 being what contributed towards the idol system and it was the birth of kpop. There was only really album sales to go by in this time though which lead to huge sales like S.E.S selling over 700k since if you wanted to hear the music you really had to buy the album unless you heard it playing.
2nd Generation - This one gets a little trickier as to understand this one I have to go back to 1st generation since towards the end of it things weren't doing too hot as Koreas music industry was struggling and the groups started venturing into other markets because of this. This lead to BoA and TVXQ becoming popular in Japan opening the door for other groups and during the 2nd generation came digitals.
3rd Generation - Now the part most get lost which is 3rd generation and while the price change that cut digitals in like half happened in 2013 there was 1 thing that happened in 2012 that had greater impact and that would be Gangnam Style. Then what came next was kpop expanding into the west and this saw album sales exploding from the highest in 2nd gen being about 550k to selling millions in 3rd gen and releasing English versions of songs that nobody needed.
4th Generation - This is just my own part which could very well change so just think of it what you will but it could start this year since there has been a decline in the digital performance of groups especially in comparison to last year and for everyone who likes to mention a group for starting a generation well we got Super M
So if all that was too much then
1st Generation = Kpops birth
2nd Generation = Japanese expansion
3rd Generation = Western expansion
That is all
