Do you think grammar is something that should be critiqued in online spaces or communities?

As a joke or pulling someone's leg, I don't really care, but... when you're online and use your phone for a lot of these sites, criticizing someone's grammar seems ridiculous and is often done in instances where one can't formulate a proper argument against another person.

another factor to consider in these discussions is that many users on online spaces may not have english as their first language. so someone harshly criticizing their grammar just comes off an extremely self-centered person with a complete lack of awareness imo.

People who correct grammar in person tend to come off as pretentious. I wouldn't care in the sense that I wouldn't be embarrassed. But this comes from the fact that Senior year of college we all had to correct each other's grammar via peer review when we were working on our senior thesis.

A lot of the Nazis probably don't speak English as their first language either. I'm not a native speaker and I used to do it when I was arguing over Kpop back in years as a last resort lol. Overall it's pretty lame tho.

if the only language you speak is english you have no business criticising those who are trying to learn it. and if you're not a native english speaker and still grammar policing others then that's extremely stupid because you wouldn't want other people to do the same thing to you as you were still learning

Same here. Since we learned to type correctly when first using computers, I do not want to unlearn that or sound like an idiot to someone.


To answer the question ~ I'm an internal grammar Nazi [ meaning I keep it to myself ] because I don't want to waste my time expressing my opinion online to those people who will likely not give a damn and continue to type with errors anyway since all they'll see me as is just another anonymous person behind a screen like them.

In short, I mind my own business.

I think that if you're going to correct somebody's grammar, just do it internally or save it for your friends during coffee hour. You don't know even the person or why they used incorrect grammar. Maybe they're not native English speakers, as Ray pointed out? Maybe they have autocorrect on, and they tried to type something grammatically correct but it came out wrong? Maybe they type fast and reflexively put the wrong word or word form? I've seen plenty of the first two and am guilty of the third, and I always give them the benefit of the doubt.

A lot of people correct others passive aggressively is the issue so peoples experience with getting grammar corrected usually just makes them feel bad about their English given it's usually someone without it as their first language so they don't take well to being corrected as it's demotivating which isn't the point.

It's like if someone cooks a meal for you and you just make them feel like they can't cook rather than ways their cooking could be improved which in this case would be improving the persons communication skills as having a grasp of a language is part of that as well.

I'll correct my friends in private dms because that's private and I know them however if someone has a spelling error on here and I correct them regardless of their thoughts on me they are not going to take well to it because it's embarrassing since you're in a roundabout way making them feel stupid in a public way.

It's all about the right context really and being able to come across as trying to genuinely help them improve rather than getting some power trip out of it which will make them feel slighted.

Ignoring all of that though it's also just the internet so not everyone wants to be making super formal sentences and may just want to be more chill which doesn't tell you that they don't know how to write correctly or in some scenarios it's auto correct being useless as ever.
