Have you ever decided to stan a group without knowing anything about them? (1 Viewer)

Just thinking because we've got some debuts from the big companies we're expecting this year.

Personally, even if I know the company or even the members, I need music before I decide to like a group. And typically at least a few songs before I bump them up beyond "I'm interested in keeping an eye on them."

Like everyone else here has said, music always needs to come first in order for me to decide on liking the group

me, currently updating the smngg thread it's a mixed bag
for aespa I already really loved nn in srg so it was natural and it just so happened to be a happy coincidence that she's irls with another idol i really really like
newjeans predebut if you stalk my acc i was very hot and cold, but overall the creative team behind the group can pique my interest too

overall though, it's always my interest gets piqued easily but stanning took time, aespa took until next level to really solidify, newjeans to around ditto

Well I share the same consensus as the other users and I would need to listen to a new group's songs first before deciding whether I liked them or not.

A good example of a group that I loved even before they debuted was Mamamoo. I liked how RBW promoted the girls during their pre-debut days by releasing collab songs with other artists to serve as a pre-releases before they debuted in June 2014. The 3 songs in question:

Don't Be Happy w/ Bumkey
Peppermint Chocolate w/ K.Will
Heeheehaheho w/ Geeks.

If it weren't for those 3 pre-release singles, I would've not cared about Mamamoo to begin with

kind of? i mean, the only thing that really matters whether i consider myself a "stan" of like anyone is whether i like their music. so i can stan a group if i like their songs but don't know anything about the members like their birthdates or whatever. for example, i decided to stan everglow after la di da because it was the best kpop song i have heard in YEARS but at that time i barely even knew who's who in that group.

Peppermint Chocolate was on repeat for me when that single came out and made me feel more hyped for Mamamoo's debut.

I also went through the same thing with KARD when they followed that same pre-debut schedule (3 pre-debut singles from late 2016 till early 2017 *my favorite pre-debut single is still is Rumor* + debut mini album in July 2017). Their pre-debut releases is what got me into the group and even I went to their fanmeet 2 months after they debuted

That's so cool! That really was an amazing time. I loved all their early releases so much, especially with the fun "hidden" versions.

I need to know the members at minimum, but I wouldn’t stan them, just follow until they drop music. The only exception is if they’re from a survival show.

The only group I can say this with is Blackpink. I was highly anticipating them after they put out their predebut dance practice and teasers.

Other than them, I don't think I usually do

Pristin i was supporting but they imploded.

Aespa I like black mamba and next level but savage was a no and thus i just follow the girls.

IVE and Ssera i love My iz girls but both are hit and miss music wise. so same as Aespa although i do own more Ive albums that the other 2 combined.

Lightsum Love love Nayoung but its cube and a train wreck.

UNIS i am enjoying.

So yes for the most part they can generate interest but the music/skill is the deciding factor it has to be something i enjoy.
For the most part they fail there.

And ofc i will never support a big 4 produce style /show group. Man up pick a team in house, is already survival.

usually I'm very hestitant to stan a new group, I mostly just casually follow them for a long time and if they keep releasing a lot of songs that I love, I might stan!

Only exception so far was Fifty Fifty and only because I was admiring Keena so much. Luckily it turned out I really loved their new music fromt he get go!

I do love NMIXX, but to me, they're one of the most obvious examples of how much a company really can help/hinder an artist. O.O had such negative reception and still sold almost half a million copies.

yes but they still sold a shit tonne of albums which is the ultimate goal no?

and I do think JYPE thought o.o and dice and their mixxpop strategy would have worked but alas it didn't so they changed directions after that no?

cravity -> pdx101. i already was familiar with a few members who were on the show. and i generally like starship music so.

technically i stanned trendz before debut too, again because of a survival show. mixnine which havit was on. was huge fan of havit so i just wanted to support him, then nh boys happened, and then trendz IT WAS YEARS OF WAITING AAUUGH
