Have you ever enjoyed a piece of media only to find out that the prevailing opinion is that it sucks? (2 Viewers)

I'm having a great time with my current read, and it's at only a 3.25 on Good Reads right now. I feel like I'm waiting for the suck to kick in, but it hasn't yet. I'm only halfway through, though, so maybe it will drop the ball horribly at the last minute.

Meanwhile, the last book I finished is at a 4.32, and it was actually bad. Like 200 pages could have easily been cut from it and lost absolutely nothing, but different genre. I feel like some genres, the readers are more forgiving than others.

I've been interested in seeing Supergirl because I unexpectedly really liked Superman last year! (Like, I didn't think it would be bad, he's just not a hero I care one way or another about.) And people I know IRL all say Supergirl was fun and worth the watch, but the online discourse is like "Here's why Supergirl is GARBAGE."

Maybe I'll go out later since it's a holiday weekend and all lol

Sometimes I think some media benefits from not being too big a fan of the source material in the first place. I never saw the TV show, but I agree that the ATLA movie is still tolerably watchable.

It kind of reminds me of seeing some of the live action adaptations coming to streaming services lately. Like I've really enjoyed One Piece, and there's a Persona adaptation coming later too, so my reaction was "cool, I hope it's good like One Piece!" But then saw all the comments that were like "I'm sure Netflix will RUIN it like One Piece."

I agree! It's just a bummer to be enjoying something and want to talk about some of the cool elements to it, and then find out that you're the outlier lol

I've learned the hard way that you can pre-emptively ruin something for yourself by reading too much online discourse first, because your brain is all primed to look for all the terrible aspects of it. Even if they're relatively minor in the grand scheme.

Wow that has got to be one of the few haters of the One Piece show since the author is personally doing the show running..

Its the only thing that gives me any hope for Mistborn..

And about source material that is totally true. the amount of adaptation i have hated in so many , bu t i never read xmen comics so i can watch the movies unlike my comic book nerd friends. ( although x3 is pretty silly/bad)


I under stand the hate for adaptions (and i really really hate many adaptions). I think the worst part is the adaption becomes cannon. because far more ppl will see it than have read it by and large.

I once read the reviews of a book I have put on my kindle library. They were mostly praises and it was a romance with a happy ending lol so I started reading it right away.

It was absolute trash! Just in the first chapter, every other word was a cuss. Suffice it to say, I dnf it.

yeah exactly. i tend to avoid reviews and spoilers of something i want to see before i go see it. if theres stuff im looking forward to i dont want to spoil the experience and just enjoy it. and if im in a minority then so be it, i dont care what other people hate as long as i like it. i will be dying on some hills 🤷‍♂️

What i do is watch a few folks whos reviews and taste occasionally match mine , but they tend to identify in the review teh stuff i dislike so i know if i should avoid it.

I understand and I totally get some of the critcism it gets, I would even agree that certain parts of it is very poorly written.

I think that what I like about it is (mostly) that it reminds me of the emotional intensity and turmoil of being a teenager, I kind of miss being able to feel little things that strongly and now that I'm older I'm too busy being rational for that.

There have been plenty of anime shows that I've watched where people say the show sucks but I still enjoyed them quite a bit. Then again, there are plenty of big anime shows that people love but I personally think are terrible

I'm the type of person watch a tone of garbage movies. I guess there have been a few that was fine to me that maybe the other 3 people that watched them didn't like said movies.

The Lord of Powers was good to me even though people seemed to hate it.

I have been disappointed in some things that most people like though.

Solo Leveling comes to mind and Demon Slayer comes to mind. I find these two anime to be really bad. (Don't kill me for it)

I enjoyed movies like Waterworld, The Postman, Exorcist II, Morbius, The Stand. I know people who would put them on their 'worst movies ever' list. But why should I care?
