I haven’t made tomato soup in ages but I found a recipe where they add potatoes to it. Is that a common thing or is the recipe just weird?

No.. but it sounds like it would taste fine. I mean people hollow out potatoes and stuff them all the time.. Plus I've found that potatoes tend to mimic whatever flavor you add... I wouldn't add caramel to potatoes, but anything else would be good.
