@daesuki

here is my entry.

firecrackers

streets made of grayish dirt
covered by cold blue feet
so small, they carry not far
a child of beaten flesh

the skin, its raw
long lost by plush slippers
whats left are golden firecrackers
bringing glittering fantasies

they creep up
coming from the dark shadows
a wall as high as the sky
serving as canvas for painted memories

warm tears meat frozen cheeks
her bright smile still telling stories
as you pass by you listen briefly
of her story of vanishing lights

inspired by The Little Match Girl by Hans Christian Andersen
I found this one in a Christmas story list, so I hope thats fine.

Here's mine!

A Harry Styles Christmas Carol

On a cold, snowy Christmas Eve in London, an elderly Harry Styles was hard at work in his office when his cell phone rang. Sighing, he picked it up and said rudely, “Right, what is it?”

“Uncle Harry!” he heard his nephew, Ned, address him on the other line. He had a cheery tone in his voice, which made Harry’s face heat up with annoyance and ire. “Won’t you come to Christmas dinner tomorrow? The missus, the kids, and I would be chuffed to have you!”

“Bah! Humbug,” Harry spat. “No, I will not come to dinner; I have to work!”

“But Uncle Harry, tomorrow is Christmas! Everybody should have the day off to spend time with family!”

“Like I care!” With that, Harry abruptly ended the call and went back to work. “Humbug,” he muttered to himself.

At 8 pm, Harry finally decided to call it a night and go home, but before he had a chance to walk out, he found himself face-to-face with a smiling young man. Instead of addressing this man’s issue, Harry pushed him aside and continued wordlessly to his car.

“Well, that was quite rude, sir,” he heard a male voice behind him. It was the man he’d pushed away, and he’d followed him across the parking lot.

Harry slowly turned around with gritted teeth and asked him what he wanted.

“A charitable donation, sir,” the young man said. “I’m a supporter of the local children’s charity and would love it if you spared them some money.”

“Bah!” Harry shouted in his face. “Go away, you humbug!”

The man was taken aback by this behavior. “Well, okay, then! Just know that there will be poor children without homes this Christmas.”

“Humbug,” Harry muttered to himself as the beggar walked away. He had barely gotten into the driver’s seat when he was approached by one of his employees, a middle-aged man named Rob Thatcher.

“Mr. Styles, might I have tomorrow off?” Rob asked his boss. “It’s Christmas tomorrow, you know.”

“No, you may not,” Harry said in a pissed tone. He had had enough encounters in one night. “You know I work tomorrow, and whenever I work, you work!”

“But sir, Christmas is the most wonderful time of the year! And besides, I’ve family coming to town from up north and need to spend time with them.”

Harry rolled his eyes. “Bah, humbug! Fine, you can have tomorrow off. Just get out of my face!”

“Certainly, Mr. Styles.”

When he got home, Harry shrugged out of his winter outerwear and hung it all up on the coatrack just in time for a translucent, ghostly figure to appear in front of him. He looked like Harry’s long-dead business partner, Louis Tomlinson, but he had chains all over him. He also had a bulging money bag in his left hand.

“Tomlinson!” Harry exclaimed in surprise. “What are you doing here?! I thought you were dead?”

Harry attempted to hug Louis as if he were a real person, but he ended up wrapping his arms around thin air. Louis let out an eerie laugh at this.

“Silly Styles!” he taunted. “I am still dead; I’m merely his ghost.”

“But… but if it weren’t for those chains, I would’ve thought you were Tomlinson himself!”

“Silence!” the ghost barked, making Harry back away in fear. He eventually bumped into his recliner and sat down. “Now, listen up; I am here because you have been incredibly miserable since I died.”

“Rubbish!” Harry guffawed. “I just tell it like it is; I’m a very busy old man, you know.”

“Silence!” the ghost repeated. “I am giving you one chance to redeem yourself and avoid becoming a greedy, chain-clad ghost like me. You will be visited tonight by three ghosts: the Ghosts of Christmases Past, Present, and Future.”

“Hah!” Harry scoffed. “You’re bluffing! There will be no such event.”

“Well, I’m a ghost; can’t you see me?” the ghost pointed out. “Anyway, they will come one by one, every time the clock strikes the hour, starting at midnight. Christmas Past will be first, followed by Christmas Present, and finally by Christmas Future. Don’t say I didn’t warn you!”

With that, the ghost vanished into the atmosphere. Harry tried to shake off this encounter, convincing himself that this was all in his head. But unbeknownst to him, he’d have a very restless night ahead of him.

Harry went to bed at around eleven, after a quick, microwaveable dinner, but he found it extremely hard to fall asleep because all he could think about was Louis’ words. He finally drifted off when the clock struck midnight, but he was rudely awakened by his name being called in an eerie voice.

“Styles…” he heard. “Styles…”

Harry opened his eyes and looked around. He didn’t see anything, so he tried to go back to sleep. Then, a vision appeared before him. It was another ghost, this one tall, thin, and resembling a younger version of himself.

“Huh?” Harry said groggily. “Who are you? What’s your deal?”

“Your welfare!” the ghost replied. “I am the Ghost of Christmas Past. Your welfare is in danger, and you’ve been given one chance to redeem yourself.”

“Well, I’d rather benefit from a good night’s sleep!”

“Your reclamation, then. Take heed!”

With that, the ghost took Harry by the hand and led him through a time portal. Harry then found himself looking at his old boarding school, Holmes Chapel Comprehensive School.

“Let’s go inside,” the ghost urged. He led Harry inside the building and to the cafeteria, where Young Harry sat alone, eating the lunch his mum had made for him. “Who is that?”

“Why… that’s me!” Harry exclaimed. “But why am I sitting alone?”

“You had a very lonely childhood. Not too many kids would sit with you because of your introverted ways.”

Harry saw a girl ask Young Harry if she could sit with him and watched as Young Harry scooted over so she could do just that.

“That’s your sister, Gemma.”

“Yes, it is!” Harry cried. “We were stuck to each other like glue until her untimely death. There isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t miss her.”

“Right, you were! Let’s go someplace different, shall we?”

The ghost led Harry through another portal, this time to the home of Harry’s old manager, Simon Cowell. During his time in One Direction, Simon had treated him and the other members like sons. It had been a great shame when the group disbanded and were no longer associated with the entertainment mogul.

“This is where your manager was hosting a Christmas party one year. All of One Direction and their families were invited, including your ex-fiancée, Taylor.”

“Oh, no!” Harry groaned. “Not Taylor Swift! She wrote one of her breakup songs about me, and it haunts me to this day!”

“Yes, Taylor Swift. There was a time when you were happily engaged to each other. Do you want to see?”

Harry rolled his eyes. “Do I have a choice?”

The ghost laughed. “Point taken.”

Harry was led to the parlor of Simon’s home, where everybody was gathered around, exchanging gifts. Young Harry was seen giving Taylor the plane tickets he’d bought for her for their upcoming honeymoon.

“Tickets to Marseilles!” Taylor exclaimed. “Thank you, babe! I’ve always wanted to go to France.”

Taylor threw her arms around Young Harry, and they began to make out.

“Oh, look how sweet we were!” Harry mused.

“Ah, but you said she wrote a breakup song about you, so this relationship obviously didn’t last. Let’s go to her new husband’s home to see their family.”

“It’s that goody two-shoes footballer, Travis Kelce, isn’t it?!”

“Precisely!”

The next portal the ghost sent Harry through was to Travis Kelce’s Kansas City home. He and Taylor were snuggled up on the couch as they watched “A Christmas Story” together.

“No!” Harry screamed. “I can’t take this anymore! Get me out of here!”

“There’s one more thing to see, though,” the ghost told him. “Just watch.”

“Isn’t this the best movie of all time?” Travis asked Taylor.

“Yeah, thanks for the recommendation!” Taylor replied. “You know, you’re way better than that jerk I used to be engaged to.”

“How so?”

“Ever since his business partner died, he’s turned into a monster. He was nothing short of a greedy, money-hungry bastard who rode a high horse and wanted absolutely nothing to do with me. You’re different, Trav; you’re always there for me and very down-to-earth.”

“Take me home right now!” Harry demanded the ghost. “This is getting ridiculous!”

“As you wish,” the ghost said, snapping his fingers to take them back to the present.

Harry awoke from this vision sweating and panting heavily with fear. He looked at his watch and discovered that almost an hour had passed. Remembering his had another ghost coming, Harry groaned and was almost asleep again when he was approached by another ghost. This one looked friendlier than the last, with a warm smile and twinkling eyes. He wore a green cloak and sported a full beard.

“I am the Ghost of Christmas Present,” he greeted warmly. “You have one chance to redeem yourself from your monstrous ways, and I’m here to help!”

“Let me sleep in peace!” Harry bellowed. “Go away!”

“Not until I show you some things that are happening around you right now. Come on!”

The ghost took Harry through a portal that took them to a Christmas market, where people were purchasing things like ornaments and other fixings for their Christmas trees, stockings to hang by the fireplace, and Christmas cards to send to loved ones.

“You see, if you weren’t so in your head, Styles,” the ghost pointed out, “you’d recognize that people are usually happy and cheerful this time of year.”

“Yeah, well, I’m not one of them!” Harry said gruffly. “Take me somewhere else!”

The ghost gladly brought Harry to different Christmas dinners: one in a miner’s cottage and another in a lighthouse. They both made Harry want to pull his hair out with disgust.

“Why are they eating so much food?!” Harry wanted to know. “Don’t they know they’ll be fat when it’s over?”

“The point isn’t that they’re eating. They’re also spending time with family. Oh, and speaking of family, let’s go to your nephew’s Christmas party.”

Harry sighed. “Alright, fine!”

The ghost took Harry through another portal into Ned’s house, where there was a huge Christmas party being celebrated. Among the guests was a small, happy-looking boy chattering away with some of his siblings. But there was something off about him: he was incredibly skinny and had a brace on his left leg.

“Oh, that poor boy!” Harry commented.

“That’s your youngest great-nephew, Tiny Tim,” the ghost said. “He’s slowly fading away from childhood leukemia and will only get better if you change your ways.”

Harry laughed. “That’s the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard! A sick person can’t be cured just by an attitude adjustment!”

“Yes, he can. You treat him very poorly, and he’s only happy because it’s the Christmas season. Come along and let me show you one last thing.”

The ghost took Harry to an abandoned village, where stood two hideous, deathly thin children.

“Goodness me!” Harry remarked. “Those poor children!”

“Goodness me, those poor children!” the ghost repeated mockingly. “You’re looking at two children named Ignorance and Want. They’re withering away just like Tiny Tim because that’s how you treat children.”

“Let’s go,” Harry hissed. “This is getting ludicrous!”

“Sure thing, Styles!”

With that, Harry woke up again, only to realize that yet another hour had passed. Then, he was visited by a third ghost, a silent one that looked like the Grim Reaper, with his hood and scythe.

“The fuck?!” Harry spat. “Who ARE you?!”

The ghost gestured for Harry to follow him and silently conjured a portal to take them to a funeral home. The ghost pointed towards a closed casket, and then at Harry.

“That’s… me?” Harry whispered.

The ghost nodded and took him to a scene where Harry’s charwoman, laundress, and the local mortician were stealing all of his possessions to give to a mover who would resell them for profit.

“Bloody hell! Okay, show me just one person who feels emotion over my death – there’s got to be somebody out there!”

The ghost took Harry’s hand and took him through a portal to the home of a young couple living in a cramped-up apartment. They were joyously eating their Christmas dinner and talking about how Harry’s death has affected them.

“Now we can get out of our debt and finally get our dream home!” the wife rejoiced.

“Yeah, good riddance!” the husband agreed. They then clinked their classes together in a celebratory toast.

Harry was ready to pull his hair out with frustration. “No… no!” he shouted. “Then what happens?”

The ghost wordlessly took Harry to an abandoned graveyard featuring a tombstone with his name on it.

“Bloody hell no! Please, let me change my ways! I promise I’ll be a better bloke – scout’s honor!”

When Harry woke up again, he was delighted to see a that new day had come. He threw off the covers, jumped out of bed, and looked at his watch to see what day it was.

It was Christmas!

“Oh, blimey!” Harry shouted joyously. After he got dressed for the day, Harry got to work on spreading some Christmas cheer. He donated a large Christmas turkey to Rob’s family and money to the children’s fund that he’d rejected last night. That afternoon, he surprised Ned by attending his Christmas party.

“Uncle Harry, you made it!” Ned exclaimed. “Come in! I thought you said you weren’t coming?”

“I’ve decided to change my ways,” Harry explained. “I hope I’m not too late.”

“Oh, not at all! The missus just took the turkey out of the oven.”

“Oh, boy!”

When he went inside, Harry was greeted by Tiny Tim and picked him up to talk to him.

“Hello, Tiny Tim!” Harry greeted him. “How are you?”

“Jolly good!” Tiny Tim replied. “Can I sit next to you at dinner?”

“Of course!”

After a delicious dinner, Harry was on his way home when he ran into Rob.

“Mr. Styles!” Rob exclaimed in shock. “Thank you so much for the turkey; we found it very tasty. But I thought you were working today?”

“I need to take the day off and enjoy the holiday,” Harry explained. “And speaking of Christmas, I shall give you a Christmas bonus so you can better take care of your family.”

“Oh, thank you so much, Mr. Styles!”

“No problem. Merry Christmas!”

“Same to you.”

And for the rest of his life, Harry began to enjoy Christmas and treated everybody with kindness.

The End
