How does the new generation of groups compare to 3rd & 2nd gen in your opinion? (1 Viewer)

Is it just me, but to me it feels like the newer generation is severely lacking in the vocal department.
There is quite a few popular groups out there, but like...

I cannot think of a single female vocal to come anywhere CLOSE to Wendy & the Mamamoo girls
I cannot think of a single male vocal to come anywhere CLOSE to the EXO boys.

Even the vocalists in NCT, despite being great, don't seem to be the truly standout, knock your socks off vocals previous SM groups have had.

What do you all think?

Lia's not quite there but she's on her way, provided JYP does not force her to keep singing too high.



And I've been waiting forever for SMNGG. There will be good vocalists in there, if they ever see the light of day.

I think while Lia is good, she is not really a top vocalist.... I'd rank her maybe around the same place as Seulgi.

Honestly I feel kinda the same, there are some releases I like, but very few actual groups from who I like most releases.

I can't really think of any 4th gen/late 3rd gen groups that really match EXO and MMM/Wendy in power vocals? Ace is good, but I don't they could match both amount and skill with EXO. For rap, I think some newer groups are good, some even better maybe. Dance, I really think the newer generation do be coming through with harder dances.

I just really really stick to what I know and love, so I haven't really been getting into the newer generation yet. I'm still sticking with itzy and skz to see how their sound starts stabilizing since i do like the direction they're going in, but i haven't really been invested lmao

Also now that I have more time to answer.
I think vocally aside from NCT there haven't been powerhouse groups. That being said you are comparing them to the best of the best, so I don't think they're doing badly either, and the new gen is so new still.
Dance and rap though they're undoubtedly better, especially dance wise.

I think the newer generations debut with better styling and more defined concepts than prior generations. Like EXO's early styling was wild and I feel like with Overdose they solidified what their music sound would be but beforehand I feel like it was different to what they have today. (By sound I mean there's something about the production of the song and stuff that makes it distinctly their's).

TXT and Itzy are good comparisons for this. They have good styling (and it fits prior styling in other comebacks in Itzy's case) and I can definitely say their songs have a certain sound to them that marks them as their songs. Like there's been a couple times I've heard a txt song on a video or something but could guess it was them even without knowing all their voices.

I think this new generation has a lot of seniors that did so amazing in the vocal department like you mentioned Mamamoo, Wendy and EXO (including many others like SUJU, Girls Day and BTOB) that it really is a difficult thing to live up to those vocal powerhouses. There definitely is some still very talented vocalists in the 4th gen (The two that come to mind are Minnie and Jongho and I think they'll both continue to get better and better as the years go by), but I agree with the fact that 4th gen aren't meeting up to previous singers from the past but they're all still very new and have a long way to go so I think we'll see the growth of new vocal kings and queens in the future.

As for dancing and rap I think those have gotten better actually, a lot of older gen rapping I'm not the biggest fan of but with 4th you have Stray Kids, Ateez and Soyeon. With dance you have Loona, Itzy, VeriVery and many other idols who I personally feel like are amazing dancers.

To actually answer your question (my goodness I wrote too much haha), I love both older and newer generations, they all offer different things and strengths. I think with this generation there's so many groups that for me personally it's just more difficult for some to stand out among so many which is where I think this generation feels empty to some people if that makes sense? With past generations a lot of groups were still able to stand out in some sort of way whereas with this generation it seems to be a challenge.
