Thinking of this today after finishing a couple of reads that were, shall we say, not my favorite, and their newest release is, imo, their worst yet. (You could literally remove the main character and the story doesn't much change.)

I'm thinking, I will probably not spend money on their next book (thank goodness for libraries) but might give them one or two more tries. See if they get back to where I at least wasn't hate reading by the end. :haylul:

well, Taylor Swift's music (@LexieBoo please don't hate me for this) became darker and darker with each album after Lover, and I kept giving her chance after chance, but by TTPD I decided I'd give up and not even listen to TS12... but then, she met and got engaged to Travis Kelce and seems way happier now, so maybe this one will be happier? idk but I'm holding high hopes that it will be, because she seems like such a cool person to be around! okay, end rant.

tl;dr when an artist's music starts getting darker and more depressing, because a depressive listening to sad music doesn't mesh well at all!

I think im quite loyal(until my loyalty runs out-which I hv different thresholds for):
40(or 30 plus yrs): Suzanne Vega, until she was no longer a major label artist n I lost touch with her new(-er); I bought her best of compilation CD set tho I had most(all?) but on cassette/CD.

30(or 20 plus yrs): Tori Amos, similar to above

5-10 yrs: R.E.M. sometime in the 90s till Monster album or next one-i nvr bought pre-Monster albums as I nvr could get em on cassette/CD cost too ex(or distribution in S.E.A just too scattered then) or I only liked the songs on MTV/great MVs. After they got big n Bill Berry was ill n left, or even before tat their music or albums were out if my reach, both mentally n maybe physically(as in I dint search for the albums anymore). Then they disbanded.

Rachael Yamagata n Vienna Teng iv lost ground(I think their on hiatus tho) but I bought all their earliest CDs I could.

Books: if I'd been alive in the 50s, (n was aware of their work) I'd hv bought Asimov's n Heinlein's fiction until 80s/90s when thy stopped(died).

Douglas Adams I bought his books in the early/mid 80s until he stopped(died). Then a new Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy was published(n also a movie).

Iv been mostly loyal to Lee Child(borrowed from library), Steven Brust(same), Jim Butcher(same), LM Bujold(same but Vorkosigan only mostly). Eddings, Anthony n Donaldon I read n bought from the early 80s(mid 80s for Anthony) until some time in the 2000s/2010s I think.

I mostly hvnt tried new-ish(or new to me authors in the 2020s except a few): Ada Palmer, Claire North n iv been wanting to read Martha Wells' Murderbot for yrs(even before the tv series, just hvnt yet), Aliette de bodard(
tho only a very few Xuya tales) n between 2000-2019 I tried many authors borrowed from library including Naomi Novik, Stross(Merchant Princes), Paul Park, Stephen Baxter, Paul McAuley, Ken McLeod, Peter F Hamilton, many others but I wanna mention Scott lynch n Steven Erickson the author of malazan pentalogy(which I nvr finishrd)

George rr Martin before 2000(in or around 1997/98), Patrick rothfuss n others during the 2000s/2010s I read many loyally even Terry goodkind.

Terry Pratchett from 'going postal' forwards till he stopped(died).

Kpop I listen on spotify/youtube mvs/performances. I hvnt spent money on kpop(unless ur count trial version of spotify) so my loyalty is quite suspect to outsiders, tho I stan those in my sig with my listening, attention n even on my blog(which only has 2 posts abt SNSD in 2018).

Lets see lol i love old Heinlein much more (his younger books) i did read all of the other stuff also from the library.
read most of Asmovis circus stuff ect.

i never connected with Addams , Child or grrm.
eddings i didnt finish the elder gods but i own all of the stuff before . Anthony is all over the place some is good some is not at all .. sp i used to judge sets seperatly ie i stopped incanations of imortality later than bio of a space tyrant or xannath
Donaldson i did the covenant series.

Love butcher i am inhaling the Dresden set have reread the entire series well over 10 times.
own all the core 10 malazan

i now no longer start series that are not complete.

Naomi Novik is a great example of someone i gave up on, the books became all the same.

Sterling i read one in the set and it was enough.

Even Sanderson i will no longer start until the sequence is published.

it really depends on what kind of art they make. if i liked someone's music in the past, i might prefer their older stuff but still tune into the new ones because of curiosity - like i was the biggest swiftie you'd meet before 2022, then my excitement has gone down as i find midnights and ttpd really boring sonically and now that she's bringing back catchy melodies on her next album i might renew my stan card lol but given the fact that reading books takes much more time than listening to an album, if i disliked one book by an author i'd probably never waste time on anything they write again

Dang, and he's reliable! He's on my list of authors who I know are going to release something each year.
That's more cuz i am old and and don't want to start something that may not finish prior to eol.
his next mistborn set he is i think releasing all 3 at once or right after each other. either way he is writing them all before he releases.

Yes, he's committed that he's writing them all at the same time, so they should come out, probably year-after-year. A lot of publishers want at least a year between related releases for some reason.

Like Mark Lawrence always has his trilogies finished by the time the first one is published, but they still take 3 years to actually publish.
