And by non-native I mean us kids who had to drill the irregular verbs like crazy, who had to sweat the vocabulary, go through tons of exercises, overcome the shyness. Us, who understand the embarrassment of Korean boys trying to talk in English and who cry while laughing at "XX speaking English" compilations on youtube. Because yeah, their English is cute, but we can understand their pain.

I technically learnt french before english, but I'm better at english and my fluency level is like i was raised speaking it

i'm not a native speaker, but i feel like english is much easier to learn than my first language which is polish. it's not like i think anyone would genuinely want to learn polish unless they have to, it's not only difficult to learn but also it doesn't even sound good

It's like they're poking fun at idols genuinely trying to learn a really different language: the light teasing is fine but some people see "bad at English" like it's a personality trait

depends where you were born and which language you were exposed to more. if someone is born in England, but his parents are French, but that person went to English schools, grew up watching English shows, speaking English ...I´d say their first language is English rather than French despite being it his family´s language. sure, we call these people bilingual, but still, such a person knows English grammar better, idioms better and their level is generally better because they might have learnt the stylistics, morphology, lexikology ... all those areas are connected to it.

it all depends where your heart is :) though.

this is really hard to judge and I am feeling you. there are many questions when it comes to mocking / finding things funny.

Are Koreans making fun of people learning Korean?
Are people laughing at them because they think they are stupid or because they genuinely think they are cute? Like when you see the way Taemin speaks English it is really really cute, honestly cute and most people are very encouraging in the comments and even praise his effort.
Also how many years had they been studying English and who is laughing? Someone who can speak just one language or someone who can honestly speak two or three languages fluently.
I understand the moral dilema, but for me seeing other people struggling gives me strength :D because I see that when a famous person can laugh their mistakes off, why shouldn´t I? Is it really such a tragedy? ahaha. Maybe people will think I´m cute too :D.

I lived in France for almost 22 years, and learnt French first lol. I suppose English isn't my native language, but it sure acts like it LOL

I'm fine with people joking about it, less fine with people who joke about it all. the. damn. time.
I think there's a difference: joking about an idol maybe not being so fluent and how they're cute is ok imo, but then there are people who turn it into a personality trait which I just find weird; like being bad at a language is integral to a person's identity?? I'm wording this weirdly??

I never went through an awkward phrase with it even though it isn't my 1st or native language....
I started learning it when I was like 9, but I started watching videos etc and reading in it really early..... So by the time I actually started to communicate with others in english online, I was already quite proficient.

I’m Turkish but was born and raised in Australia so I guess English is my native tongue now. According to my mum, I only spoke Turkish until I was 5 and started school but now I consider English my first language because I’m most fluent in it. With Turkish, I can understand, read and write but I have trouble speaking. My sentences are kind of broken and consist lots of “ums” and “uhs” and are half mixed with English words lol.
