For those who don’t know, Braveheart is a movie based around Scottish Wars of independence. The film was set in the 1200s, but the outfits of the Scot’s were so off in time. The film used blue face paint for the Scots, which was from the time of the Roman Empire (so about 1000 years before the movie), paired with kilts, which didn’t exist until at least a few hundred years after the timespan of the movie. It would be similar to making a movie about Robin Hood (1200s) where he wears a toga and a Shakespeare era collar and carries a musket.

Yeah it’s pretty bad, the actual person nicknamed Braveheart irl wasn’t even the person the movie called Braveheart The whole premise is just wrong from the start

Hollywood's lack of research and care for fashion history while filming period pieces always frustrated me.
Even BBC period pieces don't have that big of a budget and they're more accurate.

I don’t think anyone did any research for Braveheart in any category tbh. The movie isn’t even about Robert the Bruce, who was the actual person called Braveheart. It’s about a completely different dude, William Wallace Robert the Bruce appears in the movie, but he’s not the main character and he’s not referred to as Braveheart

Yeah that's 90% of Hollywood-ified "historicals." Even the period films based on fictional novels get the rhinestones and polyester treatment.
Some of them are pretty to watch tho.
