HYBE CEO Releases Official Statement Regarding Internal Document With Malicious Comments About K-Pop Artists

HYBE’s CEO Lee Jae Sang has released an official statement in response to recent controversy.

Previously, during the National Assembly’s Culture, Sports and Tourism Committee audit on October 24, it was revealed that HYBE had a weekly “music industry report” that was circulated among executives of the company. Regarding our monitoring document that was highlighted during the National Assembly’s Culture, Sports, and Tourism Committee audit on October 24, I deeply apologize to the artists, industry stakeholders, and fans.

This document was created as part of a process to retrospectively gather various reactions and public opinions on industry trends and issues. Although it was intended to be shared only with a limited number of leaders to understand market and fan sentiments, the content was highly inappropriate. The document contained provocative and explicit expressions directed at K-pop artists, included personal opinions and evaluations of the author, and was preserved in written form. As the representative of the company, I acknowledge all the mistakes and take full responsibility. I am particularly sorry and distressed about the unfounded suspicions of reverse viral marketing that are not true at all, causing misunderstandings and harm to innocent artists and individuals.

I formally and respectfully apologize to the external artists mentioned in the document who have suffered damage and distress. We are also reaching out to each agency individually to offer our apologies directly. Additionally, I am also sincerely extending an official apology to all the artists of HYBE Music Group who have been subjected to criticism due to the company.

I acknowledge the lack of awareness among the leadership who received the document and, as CEO, I have immediately halted the creation of such monitoring documents. I promise to establish guidelines and strengthen internal controls to prevent such issues from occurring again.

Once again, I apologize to the artists, industry stakeholders, fans, and everyone who loves and supports K-pop for the pain caused by this incident. As the company’s representative, I commit to thorough reflection and self-examination to rectify past mistakes and prioritize the rights of all K-pop artists and respect for fans. HYBE CEO issues apology for controversial leaked internal reports

HYBE CEO Lee Jae-sang has issued a formal apology regarding leaked internal reports, which allegedly contained controversial remarks about K-pop idols.

According to The Korea Herald, the document and its contents were first made public during a National Assembly audit into the entertainment giant on October 24, during which HYBE COO and subsidiary label Belift Labs CEO Kim Tae-ho was questioned about its practices.

During the audit carried out by the South Korean National Assembly’s Culture, Sports, and Tourism Committee, assemblyman Min Hyung-bae said that the “Weekly Industry Music Report” allegedly contained 18,000 pages of malicious comments about various K-pop artists and groups, including minors.

The idols reportedly mentioned in the leaked document hail from industry rivals such as JYP Entertainment, YG Entertainment, SM Entertainment and more. Following the leak, HYBE faced widespread backlash from fans.

On October 29, CEO Lee Jae-sang issued a formal apology via HYBE’s website to “the artists, industry colleagues and fans affected by the language used in our monitoring document”, per CNA Lifestyle.

“The document was created in the process of collecting various responses and public opinions on industry trends and issues,” he wrote. “It was shared with only some leaders for the purpose of understanding the market and fan opinions, but the content of the document was very inappropriate.” Lee also noted “unfounded suspicions of reverse viral marketing” stemming from the documents’ leak, claiming they “are not true at all”.

Lee went on to “acknowledge all my mistakes on behalf of the company”, saying he felt “responsible for the fact that it contained provocative and crude expressions toward K-pop artistes, the fact that the writer’s personal views and evaluations were added, and the fact that the content was left in the document.”

The HYBE CEO also wrote that the company is actively reaching out to each company and artist mentioned in the leaked report to offer direct apologies. Lee added that his apology extends to “all artists under HYBE who have unfairly faced criticism due to this issue”.

Lee concluded the statement by writing, “We acknowledge that the leadership that received the document lacked awareness of the problem. We have immediately stopped creating the monitoring document. We promise to establish guidelines and strengthen internal controls so that this problem never happens again.”

The apology comes after SEVENTEEN’s Seungkwan posted a lengthy message on Instagram about the K-pop industry and voicing his support for fellow idols.

Speaking as an Asian(speculating only here), in corporate workplace you hv to respect(n in Korea bow to ur superiors, I am not korean nor ever worked where bowing was compulsory/a thing), humoring this is, as iv read elsewhere, probably politically positive somewhat for the politician bringing it up: to raise sympathy from the voting public who presumably hv faced the same rn or previously or in future in their working live(except they aren't millionaires like Hanni) or ingratiate themselves with future voters who are kids stanning/kpop fans who are teens now but future voters(I don't understand why politicians might do things, maybe).

I was given warning letter for blowing up at a supervisor who gave me "instructions"/advice (on friday before work ended) on a project tat I followed up during weekend when she wasn't working; then she questioned why I did wat I did which is when I shot bk tat she "instructed" to do it. But I did so on Monday so I got warned n later was let go n I felt I couldn't fight the losing my job due to being given warning letter(I was also a foreigner on a work visa). So even tho not greeting a senior is a small matter, I believe hanni musta trained at least a few mths before debut n it musta been emphasized to her tat she must bow/greet seniors rite? I think the foreign members of SNSD mentioned long ago at first how culture shocked they were abt greeting/bowing to seniors since they were born n grew up in USA. N Hanni was born in Australia which I think has a matey culture which might clash with respect/greet/bow to seniors(not just old age ppl but hierarchically above u in workplace/relationship setting) my supervisor at work at the time was younger n newer at my company. N my previous manager/management had retired/changed.

It probably is an issue tat resonates(or the politician hopes it does/will be remembered come election time) with voting public/kids who will become future voters in south korea. Heck as said above, maybe even just the publicity alone might be reason enough!

Public will not empathize with millionaire idols who went thru trainee phase/rookie phase of evaluations/monthly weighing/dorms with roaches or being injured/unwell n hvg to perform or typical kpop idol tough experiences, only we kpop fans empathize with them (mostly our faves, or if we hv human empathy others we know abt). GP might not care how horrible experience Beyonce went through in destiny's child since she a billionaire now, same for TS ig. Or the many tribulations idols go thru in everyday work. I dint any cruel comments about Wendy after she fell in 2019 at SBS Gayo Daejeon but does anyone doubt/read hate comments or unsympathetic knets/netizens exist? On tv recently i saw a scene where a person at work ignored their coworker who they actually needed their cooperation on a project later being told off for it. It turns out the person had face blindness n just walked past cos they dint recognize him. Ok it was a doctor n he was based on real life Dr sacks who inspired the character in "brilliant minds"(also I think Robin Williams character in a movie n also the movie "Awakenings" if it's not the same movie).

Weverse Magazine has released a statement regarding HYBE’s recently leaked “music industry report.”

Last month, it was revealed during a National Assembly audit that HYBE had a weekly “music industry report” that was circulated among high-ranking executives of the company. We are stating clearly that Weverse Magazine has nothing to do with the controversial monitoring document, and the members of the Weverse Magazine team are opposed to the document in question.

Most recently, HYBE’s leaked internal documents caused a huge stir in K-Pop industry.

Previously, former ADOR CEO Min Hee Jin stated her thoughts regarding the internal documents in an internal email in April.

Most recently, Weverse magazine exposed a former editor-in-chief as the person who compiled the documents and that the rest of the team was reportedly unaware of the documents.

Media outlet CBS NoCutNews held a Q&A with HYBE regarding the documents. Below is the full Q&A.

Answer: As you have heard, Lee Jae Sang made an apology on October 29 and removed the Weverse director who wrote the report from their position. Since then, there have been numerous suspicions that other members of the Weverse Magazine team were a part of writing the documents. Due to this, we decided to release an additional document to clarify.

Question: The Weverse Magazine team stated that, aside from the former editor-in-chief, no other members or external contributors knew about this document. Does this mean that the former editor-in-chief asked a separate staff that’s not part of the team, to write the report? Also, there is a part of the document that states, ‘The members who are participating in the report are taking off so the report will take a break for one week,’ which is being criticized as not being persuasive. What’s your position on this?

Answer: The former editor-in-chief created the monitoring document as a separate task from Weverse Magazine, and the personnel that the former editor requested are separate members from the Weverse Magazine team.

Question: The former editor-in-chief has been removed from their position. What is their current position? Are there any other follow-up measures in relation to this incident?

Answer: The former editor-in-chief is currently on standby and not working. After an internal review, appropriate measures will be taken.

Question: In the CEO’s apology, he denied the suspicion of reverse viral marketing. However, a netizen claiming to be a HYBE employee stated that many of the things in the report were actually planned. Do you still stand by the claim that there was no reverse viral marketing, and if they are false, are you preparing follow-up measures about this?

Answer: The claim that we used reverse viral marketing is not true. We are considering taking the appropriate measures regarding the false claims.

Question: You said you are contacting each agency separately to apologize directly. Please explain how and to what extent you are apologizing.

Girl group New Jeans sent a proof of content to its agency, Adore, saying, "If we don't accept the request for correction, we will cancel the exclusive contract."

According to the music industry on the 13th, Newzins sent out proof of contents under the real names of five members, Kim Min-ji, Hani Palm, Marsh Daniel, Kang Hae-rin and Lee Hye-in.

In their proof of content, the members demanded that "all serious violations of the exclusive contract we are addressing within 14 days from the date of receipt of this letter" be corrected.

The specific requirements that the members want to correct are not known.

Girl group NewJeans sent a certified document to its agency ADOR stating that the group members will terminate their exclusive contract if their demands for corrective action are not met, according to local media on Wednesday.

The conflict between NewJeans and ADOR has intensified since the group and Min Hee-jin called for the former agency CEO's reinstatement.

“Within 14 days of receiving this document, address all the major violations of the exclusive contract that we have outlined,” stated a demand in the document.

All five members signed the last page of the document under their real names: Kim Min-ji, Hanni Pham, Danielle Marsh, Kang Hye-rin and Lee Hye-in.

Further information regarding the specific demands from the members have not yet been disclosed.

However, in the document, NewJeans called attention to HYBE’s music industry report, which was disclosed in the National Assembly inspection, criticizing a comment included in the report saying that HYBE could "simply move on and restrategize after abandoning NewJeans.”

The NewJeans members urged ADOR to take all necessary action as their management company.

At a National Assembly audit on Oct. 24, Rep. Min Hyung-bae of the Democratic Party revealed an internal HYBE document titled "Weekly Music Industry Report," which included derogatory comments about NewJeans and other K-pop idols.

“If ADOR does not accept the corrective demands, we will terminate the exclusive contract," the document further reads.

ADOR informed local media on Wednesday evening that it had not yet received such a document and therefore had no comment.

Min Hee-jin demands HYBE buy her ADOR shares

Min Hee-jin demanded that she be able to exercise her put option on ADOR shares, requesting HYBE to buy the shares that she owns, local media reported Thursday.

Earlier this month, Min notified HYBE that she would exercise her put option, an investor's right to sell their shares to the company upon demand, over her 18 percent share of ADOR, according to Yonhap.

The shareholder contract between Min and HYBE states that Min is able to sell her shares at three-quarters of ADOR's average total operating profit over the last two years, multiplied by 13. ADOR reported a 4 billion won operating deficit in 2022 ($2.8 million) and 35.5 billion won in operating profit in 2023, meaning that she will get 26 billion won in total if her put option is fully exercised.

However, HYBE is trying to end the contract with Min, which was challenged by Min and is now pending a decision from the court. Should the court take HYBE's side, the company would be free to decide whether or not it wants to buy Min's shares.

Meanwhile, HYBE also received an ultimatum from girl group NewJeans to bring back Min Hee-jin as the CEO of ADOR before Nov. 27 or the members will take legal measures to terminate their exclusive contracts with the agency.

In a formal legal notice sent Wednesday, K-pop girl group NewJeans issued an ultimatum to its agency, Ador, saying it would terminate its members' exclusive contracts if the group's demands were not met.

According to reports, the certification of content sent by the five NewJeans members — Minji, Hanni, Danielle, Haerin and Hyein — includes requests for the label to "rectify all material breaches of the exclusive contract within 14 days of receiving."

This includes a demand for Ador's former CEO, Min Hee-jin, to resume her former role overseeing Ador's management and NewJeans' overall production, as she did in the past.

"Bring Ador back to the time when NewJeans happily worked with Min until March 2024," the notice reportedly states. "We miss the NewJeans that was excited about creating new, creative music and performances with her."

This tension follows a power struggle between Ador's parent company, HYBE Labels, and former CEO Min, which began in April. The conflict escalated in August when HYBE unilaterally dismissed Min through Ador's board meeting, followed by a public demand by the five NewJeans members for Min's return in a surprise YouTube livestream in September.

The legal notice also reportedly includes a request for an official apology regarding bullying allegations made by member Hanni. In the September livestream, Hanni alleged that a manager for a K-pop group under another HYBE subsidiary instructed their artists to "ignore" her during an encounter within HYBE headquarters.

NewJeans additionally raised concerns about controversial internal HYBE reports, which previously sparked criticism for containing derogatory remarks about several active K-pop idols.

The group's notice demanded Ador address a statement from the report, "It would be easier to abandon NewJeans from the scene and start fresh," and identify who was responsible for the decision. They requested civil and criminal action if any illegal activity was discovered.

Further demands include the removal of videos and photos exposed without consent during the agency dispute, an assessment of losses NewJeans incurred due to HYBE's alleged "chart manipulation" tactics, resolution of issues arising from conflicts with director Shin Woo-seok — who has worked on the group's creative projects — and preservation of NewJeans' unique style and works.

The NewJeans members also addressed rumors involving their families, denying any connection to these rumors and vowing firm action against anyone spreading false information about them.

Ador noted Thursday that they have received NewJeans requests.

“We received the notice this morning and are currently reviewing it to understand the specific requests. We are committed to resolving this matter wisely so that we can continue working with the artist," the agency said.

While the HYBE-Ador conflict now risks evolving into a contractual dispute between NewJeans members and their agency, industry insiders see little hope for an amicable resolution, as both sides have failed to reach an agreement despite multiple public appeals and meetings.

Ha Seo-jeong, an attorney with Homes Law Firm, expressed concerns that NewJeans' desire to part ways with HYBE could be seen as a tampering attempt.

"Tampering generally refers to third parties trying to entice an athlete or artist from a company during their contract term. Since Min was CEO of both HYBE and Ador, this wouldn't be considered traditional tampering," she clarified.

However, she added, "If NewJeans' push for independence progresses, it could legally constitute tampering by Min's side."

Under standard contract terms, penalties are calculated by multiplying the monthly average revenue over the last two years by the remaining contract term, which for NewJeans could exceed 300 billion won ($213 million). The contract term between NewJeans and Ador is until 2029.

Despite the dispute, NewJeans plans to proceed with its scheduled activities, including a special performance at the 2024 Korea Grand Music Awards at Inspire Arena on Yeongjong Island, Incheon, slated for Saturday. Hanni will also perform as an opening act alongside actor Nam Ji-hyun, who will co-host the event.
