Ador is not pleased.
and neither are NJ which makes things so fun

I haven't seen many K-dramas (only one - snowdrop because of Jisoo) but I've seen plenty of C-dramas so I'm going to assume they re similar in nature which the politicks and twists and turns

and this civil war is the best K-drama of them all

NewJeans Lawyers Up Amid Ugly Hybe/Ador Showdown — Calvin Klein Ad Moves Forward Minus the K-Pop Group’s Name

The better part of a year later, the NewJeans v. Ador dispute is uglier than ever, and the K-pop group has lawyered up amid a push to terminate its deal.
NewJeans, apparently posting on social media as “jeanzforfree” at present, took to Instagram to announce its new legal team. For those who’ve followed the underlying saga, the maneuver (and the conspicuous public disclosure thereof) won’t exactly come as a surprise.

Throughout 2024, we covered the convoluted showdown between Min Hee-Jin (the now-former CEO of Ador, which set sail under Hybe in 2021) and Hybe/Ador management.

Long story short, the professional home of BTS accused Min of conspiring to sell a stake in Ador and/or woo NewJeans to a new company. On the other side of the battle, Min dismissed the allegations as retaliation for criticism she’d made over the perceived image-related overlap between NewJeans and Illit (which is signed to another Hybe subsidiary).

A number of twists, turns, press conferences, and lawsuits later, Hybe pushed out Min as Ador’s CEO (but didn’t necessarily block her from working with NewJeans) in August 2024.
Min’s formal resignation followed in November and, to put it mildly, didn’t sit right with the K-pop group she’d produced.

NewJeans made as much abundantly clear with an ultimatum demanding Min’s reinstatement. And when that reinstatement failed to materialize – of course, the ship had sailed a long time beforehand – the “Super Shy” act publicly announced its unilateral exit, citing alleged contractual violations, from Ador.

Bringing the focus back to the current year, Ador is far from thrilled with the move, maintaining in more words that the contract remains valid into 2029. (Outlets including the BBC have reported the deal’s final year as 2027; the 2029 cutoff comes from multiple reports out of South Korea.)

Earlier in January, the company filed for an injunction to prevent NewJeans from inking additional agreements, including sponsorships, on its own.

(NewJeans – or at least the talent behind the group – yesterday went ahead and rolled out a Calvin Klein advert anyway; the aforementioned “jeanzforfree” profile already boasts 4.2 million Instagram followers. Meanwhile, the official NewJeans Instagram account is continuing to run sponsored posts for its 12.7 million followers.)

Enter the NewJeans members’ newly announced hiring of Seoul law firm Shin & Kim, which, per the Korea Times, is likewise repping Min.
NewJeans also took the opportunity to insinuate that Hybe and Ador had fueled media pushback, alleging that “groundless criticism poured in through the media and YouTube reaction channels, most of which contained information that could only have come from” the companies.

It probably didn’t need saying in light of the months-long confrontation, but the K-pop stars further underscored that they “have absolutely no intention of returning” to Hybe/Ador.

Stated differently, a resolution, amicable or otherwise, doesn’t appear to be in the near-term cards. However, the intensifying dispute is sure to deliver noteworthy developments as it keeps on playing out.
Enter a recent Korea Herald report suggesting that NewJeans could take a three-month break as it works around member Hanni’s expiring E-6 visa.

Born in Melbourne to Vietnamese parents, Hanni must either renew the employment-contingent visa through Ador or return to Australia before diving into “a lengthy and stringent process” for a new permit, per the report. (Though seemingly unlikely to finalize, the Ador renewal is already in motion on the company’s end in keeping with the stance that the contract is still in effect, per the report.)

Said process could take months and would require, among several other things, “an exclusive contract with one [K-pop] agency,” the Herald summed up. That may be difficult to secure if Ador opts to continue enforcing (or attempting to enforce) the existing agreement.

K-pop group NewJeans hires law firm, plans name change as HYBE dispute escalates

K-pop group NewJeans has appointed law firm Shin & Kim LLC to represent them in their escalating legal battle against their management company ADOR and its parent company HYBE.

The five-member group announced Thursday (January 23) that they have no plans to return to ADOR amid an ongoing contract dispute. The statement follows ADOR’s December 2024 lawsuit seeking to confirm the validity of their exclusive contract with the group, and a subsequent injunction filed earlier this month to prevent NewJeans from signing external advertising contracts.

“Given that ADOR and HYBE have appointed Kim & Chang Law Firm as their representative, we felt the need for a law firm that could effectively counter this. We believe Shin & Kim LLC is the most suitable choice, as they already understand HYBE and ADOR’s wrongdoings and issues, which is crucial for responding to the rapidly proceeding injunction,” the group said in a statement issued to local media.

Notably, Shin & Kim LLC also represents former ADOR CEO and NewJeans producer Min Hee-jin.

NewJeans members — Minji, Hanni, Danielle, Haerin, and Hyein — had previously declared their intention to terminate their contracts with ADOR in November. “Staying at the agency will only prolong our psychological pain and waste our time,” Hanni was quoted by Korea JoongAng Daily as saying at the time.

“Rather than using cowardly methods to disparage and divide us behind closed doors and manipulating the media with false information, we wish they would address these matters honestly and fairly.”

NewJeans

In their latest statement, the group alleges that “HYBE and ADOR have failed to fulfill their duties as an agency to protect and nurture their artists.”

According to NewJeans, ADOR and HYBE failed to fulfill basic management duties and attempted to sideline the group under the guise of an “extended vacation.” They also accused the companies of orchestrating a negative media campaign against them.

“Even after the legal termination of our exclusive contract, groundless criticism poured in through the media and YouTube reaction channels, most of which contained information that could only have come from ADOR and HYBE. We cannot help but conclude that ADOR and HYBE are at the center of all these issues,” NewJeans said.

NewJeans further alleged that while ADOR publicly calls for their return, the agency has engaged in behind-the-scenes tactics to “harass and attack” them, including secret meetings with members’ parents in alleged attempts to create division within the group.

“Rather than using cowardly methods to disparage and divide us behind closed doors and manipulating the media with false information, we wish they would address these matters honestly and fairly,” the members said.

They reiterated that they “have absolutely no intention of returning to HYBE and ADOR.”

“We will fight proudly in court through legal proceedings to clearly reveal the wrongdoings of ADOR and HYBE, and to make the truth known.”

“We will fight proudly in court through legal proceedings to clearly reveal the wrongdoings of ADOR and HYBE, and to make the truth known.”

NewJeans

The group signaled their intention to move forward independently, announcing separately that they are accepting suggestions for a new group name. The announcement garnered substantial fan engagement, with over 16,000 comments from their fanbase, known as Bunnies, within the first hour, according to The Korea Herald.

NewJeans members to start under new name, NJZ

Members of girl group NewJeans have chosen a new name to represent them: NJZ.

The five singers will start anew under their new name, with their first event being the 'Complex Live' concert at the ComplexCon Hong Kong festival, according to the concert organizer.

"This will be the first new activity after NJZ changes its name," the organizer said in a press release. "NJZ is one of the most influential girl groups in the Korean pop music market. It consists of members Minji, Hanni, Danielle, Haerin and Hyein."

"We are so excited to be able to go on stage and show a new side of ourselves," member Minji said in the press release. She was referred to as NJZ member Minji.

"This performance will be so important for us," she continued. "We hope this will be the chance to let the fans from around the world hear the music that we've been dying to show so far."

ComplexCon Hong Kong takes place from March 21 to 23 at the Hong Kong Asia World-Expo. The specific date of NJZ's performance was not disclosed.

Other Korean artists performing at the concert will include Zico, B.I, Sik-K, Changmo and Lil Moshpit.

Ticket sales will begin on Feb. 10 at 4 p.m. Hong Kong time for HSBC credit card and HSBC Mastercard debit cardholders at Cityline. General sales will take place on Feb. 12 at 4 p.m. at Cityline, Maoyan, Ctrip and Trip.com.

LE SSERAFIM, ILLIT defamation case: HYBE seeks personal details of 7 malicious YouTubers, US court approves

A US court orders Google to share the identities of seven YouTube channels accused of defaming ILLIT and LE SSERAFIM, allowing Source Music and BELIFT LAB to proceed with legal action.

Major legal strides have been made in Source Music and BELIFT LAB’s ongoing battle against defamatory online content, as a U.S. court has ruled that Google must disclose the identities of seven YouTube channel operators accused of spreading false claims about K-pop groups LE SSERAFIM and ILLIT.

The ruling follows a legal motion filed by HYBE, Source Music, and BELIFT LAB in September 2024, requesting Google’s compliance under a U.S. law that facilitates the collection of evidence for foreign lawsuits. The YouTube channels in question- Cute Rabbit Jjang, EnterPick, People Box, Da Issue, NewJeansFam, Issue Tan, and Wangjam Issue—collectively amass over 250,000 subscribers. These channels have been accused of making damaging allegations, including claims that LE SSERAFIM concealed members’ vocal abilities and that ILLIT engaged in plagiarism.

Source Music and BELIFT LAB initially took legal action in Seoul’s Western District Court in August 2024. However, the lack of identifiable information regarding the YouTube channel operators stalled the process. Seeking to move forward, HYBE and its affiliated labels petitioned the U.S. courts to compel Google to disclose the necessary details.

On November 27, 2024, a chief magistrate approved the request, allowing the agencies to issue a subpoena to Google. The requested data included Google account details, personal identification information, and access logs tied to the seven channels. A formal certificate of service was issued to Google on December 5, 2024, providing the company with 30 days to notify the individuals concerned.

By February 5, 2025, the court confirmed that no objections had been filed within the stipulated period, clearing the path for the case to proceed. Under the original terms, Google now has 10 days to supply the requested data to Source Music and BELIFT LAB. Once received, the information will enable the labels to advance their defamation lawsuits in South Korea.

This legal action is part of HYBE’s broader initiative to combat defamation and malicious online content targeting its artists. Meanwhile, a previous similar case has seen an unwelcome outcome, in which a separate request to obtain the identity of an X user making allegations against BTS and LE SSERAFIM was denied earlier. Now with the latest court ruling, Source Music and BELIFT LAB are poised to escalate their legal efforts against harmful online content, reinforcing their commitment to protecting their artists from defamation and misinformation.

K-pop agency ADOR to media: Stop using ‘NJZ’, use ‘NewJeans’ instead amid contract dispute

SEOUL, Feb 10 — The NewJeans saga continues as HYBE label ADOR has requested media outlets to stop using the name NJZ and stick to NewJeans.

K-pop girl group members Minji, Hanni, Danielle, Haerin, and Hyein had announced a new name and rebranding as NJZ on February 7, which ADOR has refused to recognize.

In a statement, ADOR stated: "The members of NewJeans have announced plans to operate under a name that was not agreed upon with ADOR, causing confusion among reporters. The exclusive contract between the NewJeans members and ADOR is still legally valid. Claims of contract termination are unilateral."

ADOR insists that the contract is still valid despite the members stating that via the terms of the agreement, the contract is now void.

Despite the legal complications, the five NewJeans/NJZ members have announced plans to release a new single that will be performed on March 23 at ComplexCon in Hong Kong.

The girls are screwed.
no way the industry can let this walk away happen, the precedent would be too damaging.
I am stunned that there have been no cease and desist orders.

I was reading abt Prince's dispute with his label n the fact he changed his identity to a symbol; BUT the reason he fell out with the label was he gad signed a $100M US deal to release I believe [edit] actually only 6 10 [end edit] albums, n the label wanted to maximise his [edit] back catalog [end edit] output by spreading it out. He felt sthg about tat enuf to write SL*V*(insert vowels of ur choice) on his face AND he still produced the required number of albums to fulfil his contract. I believe MHDHH r too young to know(or maybe even care) abt Prince n anyway if they did it might be tat it's a different country n an old man's story n doesn't hv anything to do with MHDHH. Anyways just thought it was interesting. N I think Warners didn't file any injunction against Prince or TAFKAP, instead they gave out a press pack containing the symbol Prince wanted to be known by on floppy disks to idk how many 100s/1000s were mailed out IN 1993! But HYBE/ADOR vs NJZ/MHDHH is new ig.

I woulda thought ADOR would hv gotten another injunction to prevent NJZ rebranding but maybe the damage PR-wise is why it's not yet been done idk. This whole situation is as mystifying as Prince renaming to TAFKAP(I tried to copy paste the symbol but it seems it's not widely used maybe due to copyright issues if a emoji or such was created from it)

I still think the worst tat might happen is NJZ is ordered to pay $200~300M in damages or penalties n they might make tat much by the time the final judgement is verdicted(if there such a word/verb) or maybe on appeal it might be reduced to $10/50/100M or more. This might take yrs n Blake Luvely v. J. Baldoni might use up the PR company allegedly/reportedly bought by HYBE/Scooter in US so who knows what's happening behind the scenes. I'm so relieved I hv no bias/stan-dom for NJZ/MHDHH.

and the contracts are different .

kpop contracts are more like old school Hollywood contracts where the art, and the artist are wholly controlled by the agency. Nothing they do falls outside the scope of the contract. NIL all belong to the agency similar to university scholarships back in the day for athletes..

But HYBE/ADOR theoretically can unilaterally cancel/void the contract just as the co-produced GLAM was disbanded. OK maybe not unilaterally as in NWJNS/MHDHH situation but if the money behind a gg says we're not making any money n we're pulling the plug n letting u go from the contract without any penalty fees(just the past few yrs of yr life tat u spent training) or eg cignature, n so many others I dint stan/can't rmbr-wats the difference?

I'm not defending MHDHH/NJZ or even playing devil's advocate-im just trying to question the devil's bargain tat young teens in korea/niw worldwide who signed trainee contracts n example the SMRG(irls) who left n nvr debuted after aespa n H2H were finalised(or left after waiting too long after RV debuted).

I'm saying there is a imbalance in a 7 yr contract where terms aren't negotiable even if a group has unprecedented success, ie EXO/TVXQ/SHINHWA/MBLAQ/B2ST/NWJNS/maybe others too. I hope there's no equivalent to Taylor Swift experience/situation where her songs are owned(or the masters n publishing rights) by the label/agency owner who signed her early on(as I understand it, if I'm wrong I don't know why she rerecorded her OWN songs). Ofc I'm biased cos Sica got thrown out of SNSD n gfriend were let go from SouMu. Tat is my entire pov. Legally SM/SouMu were within their rights but it still happened unilaterally (as said above if the money is pulled n yr choice is to kick a fuss or leave quietly, we all know Sica n Gfriend left, quietly or not, kicking up a fuss a little). MHDHH probably don't even know or might not be thinking of previous cases but they're taking action to emancipate themselves(legally within the contract/sk laws or not no one who hasn't read the contract knows n probably even those who read the contract will only know when a final verdict n judgement is mad and all appeals are finished, which may be in 2028 for all any one knows.

Edit to add: old Hollywood contracts changed to where Whoopi Goldberg, David Cross, n kim basinger has the freedom or at least the choice to pay the penalties for breaking their film contracts or bending them in Cross' case in the Chipmunk 3quel. N basinger fought n lost(n paid or didn't idk if she actually paid cash money or settled by acting or promoted for Jennifer lynch or the production company. Whoopi got paid $7M when the company lost $33.5M. Only the chipmunks company still made money by Cross' denigrating his experience but who knows maybe if the director/producers hadn't treated him badly the 3rd Chipmunk movie might hv made as much as $400M(the box office receipts of chipmunks 2, or even more-ok maybe not) point is old Hollywood contracts gone the way of actual dinosaurs, only a fantasy now.end edit

I had an epiphany recently that what if NJZ no longer promotes in SK?
like release music and so forth but just never has any assets in SK so SK courts can't enforce judgment in SK???

the issue is the contract since we are never privy to any contract and if the contract allows such things...

also given that all (most) initial 7 year contracts are heavily slanted in the company's favour - if the group such as glam isn't making money then all the company has to do is put the group on indefinite hiatus and not give the group any activities or promotions until the expiration of the contract and thus force the group to accept the termination

which is why I've always said if you are thinking of being a kpop idol get a bloody lawyer!!!! and if you cannot afford a lawyer you cannot afford to (potentially) give up 7 years (plus trainee years) of your life under a slave contract. Will one have the bargaining power to change the terms - probably not but at the very least you understand your rights under the contract so you will be more better informed

U can't convince a million possible Rosie's to pay for a lawyer to look thru a contract tho before u sign. The lawyer will only take ur money n say it's imbalanced in favor of the company. If ur lucky u get to sign(then debut) with YG or JYP with a reportedly favorable split of profits/incoming monies but then there's the ex-Pink Punk/future 2ne1 trainees who idk if they ever debuted elsewhere, only 1 I know is probably Natty who is in KioF but how many yrs did she live on dreams n hope before tat.

I hv no answers, only a fantasy of no more Sica getting kicked from a group she spent 7 yrs n another 7 yrs in training before tat. N also she nvr asked to be a kpop idol before she(or rather her sister Krystal Soo Jung) was scouted in 2000 I think. Sica was only 11 while Krystal was even younger then. Talk abt imbalance, no idea if the character Rachel in Bright is an accurate depiction of irl experience of Sica but Rachel had to convince her parents to even train at the SM analogue. Overall I hv no actual insight or anything other than my own pov.

Sign or don't sign, train or don't train. No one can prevent the young, as I think Tiffany from SNSD either defied her father or convinced him to let her fly to Korea alone n train for a few yrs before debuting in SNSD. U shd know LSM(founder of SMEnt LOL) 😆🤣😂
