It sounds ridiculous but this is a thing that has legitimately been used and accepted in court. It's illegal in some US states, but not all. In fact, from what I can tell, the majority of states have not banned yet, though a few are considering banning it. The fact that it's still a thing is so backwards though, especially when it's been used and accepted.

Honestly, there seems to be a lot of bureaucracy needed to overturn a lot of these backwards laws. Like, for instance, there a law in Georgia that states that if a child is born out of wedlock that only the mother of the child can have custody and not the father.

A lot of laws are pretty ancient and should be updated to be more in the present
