Maybe something like giving them a set of seemingly random words (or blocks with letters, depending on the age) and asking to arrange them in full words, or a full story?

Literacy isn't just about reading and writing. More important is understanding. I'd guess answering questions that demonstrate understanding beyond factual answers.

Yeah, then I'd go with giving them blocks with letters on them and ask/help them to make words with them.

If they understand that the C, O, and W go together to make cow, and what that word means, that's a good step toward literacy in my mind.

I'm in my 40's and can't do riddles. 5 year olds wouldn't stand a chance.

I would ask the kids to play with word blocks and challenge them to make a word.
