one thing that you gotta remember is that KPS is not the rest of the internet everybody here is relatively peaceful and we try to debate or discuss the topic at hand
sure discussions may be long and occasionally heated but never do we target a person or use inappropriate language
the mods and the rest of the forum will shut that down pretty quickly

Never complain about rookies. They are new, they are learning. They should improve, but that takes time. I like to use the example of ITZY. Their vocals even now arent amazing but they put on amazing show. Chaeryeon's vocals have improved 1000% from debut. Ryujin, whos vocals still aren't great has awesome improvement. A lot of rookie groups have better vocals than ITZY.

Never complain about rookies. They are new, they are learning. They should improve, but that takes time. I like to use the example of ITZY. Their vocals even now arent amazing but they put on amazing show. Chaeryeon's vocals have improved 1000% from debut. Ryujin, whos vocals still aren't great has awesome improvement. A lot of rookie groups have better vocals than ITZY.

yeah i know they are new but when it comes to rookies from larger companies or backed by bigger companies, they have a lot of money as they're constantly being pushed in luxury brand sponsorships early on. they can easily pay for their own vocal coaches for themselves or the group. there's also cheaper ways, like paying for a online tutor or a free option, which is just watching youtube videos on how to do basic singing skills and to improve from there. yes i know it takes time to improve but it depends on how much time they are taking to me. like if a group is around for half their career, like 5 years, and if they they are just now seeing genuine improvement, it does seem a little too late as kpop contracts go up to seven years and that depends if all of the members want to renew their contract or not. it's also because those companies aren't generally training their groups vocally

It's so hard having to sit through music bank every week hoping majority of groups sing live. Good news is some sing with a backing track but it kinda sucks that the K-pop industry now has to use backtrackings to cover some idols' unstable pitch. We should absolutely expect idols to sing, at least on pitch.
I agree with everything except the rookies have to be perfect part. I understand standards are getting lower right now, but I'd rather not give rookies the slack when there are idols ten years older who have the same vocals as them. I wait a few years until we can start criticising vocals.
Anyways good opinion piece!

I wish we did though. This stuff is actually interesting. I'd love for us to talking about the inner workings of the k-pop industry and where k-pop should go more.

The overall performance is more important than singing skills IMO. In the production studio, singing skills got less relevant since there is vocal pitch correction software like AutoTune. On stage, a good overall performance (visuals, dancing, and especially charisma) can balance weaker singing skills.

i kind of disagree because kpop idols are literal idols and they are singers, it's always been like that. the real why you likely think this is because nowadays kpop groups are more performance focused, almost to the point where these groups aren't even considered kpop groups and could be called performance groups that sing. visuals, dancing, and charisma can only get you so far if you genuinely think this. if this is the case, then those kpop groups that received hate for their poor vocals such as illit and le sserafim would have not gotten any hate then. kpop idols are traditionally trained on singing, rapping and dancing. also a lot of kpop fans can see right through pitch studio correction. yeah it's good to have charisma and stuff and visuals, but at least having the basics down of singing and stuff is important. at end of day, these kpop idols make music for us, they make song covers, they have albums on streaming services and etc.

I wouldn't overrate the hate factor. Depending on the fans, idols can receive hate for literally everything they do or don't do.

I like your take and agree. I think if someone becomes a K-pop idol, they should know how to sing to an extent and also be able to grow. I also see some companies making dancers K-pop idols, and they can't sing, and it just sets them up for failure, which makes me sad

thank you for being one of the few ppl who agrees with me. ❤ you're right. i'm not saying these kpop idols have to have mamamoo levels of vocal skills but you at least have to be competent at your job being a kpop idol, so you have to learn how to sing to an extent. i know singing is an afterthought because companies look for visuals and dance nowadays, which sucks, but singing is still important in some groups, who can do it good

honestly, the 2nd gen sm groups are the ones most popular praise for having the best vocalists in kpop
