My brother was recently in an accident. He and everyone else involved are fine, but his car is done for. Apparently it’s a sucky intersection where there’s a turn blocking the road from view. He was driving along the main road but when he turned the curve another car was driving out and that car hit him. The police even told my brother that it’s a dangerous intersection, and that loads of people get into accidents at that spot. But apparently nobody so far have come up with the idea of maybe changing the intersection at all. I know it’s a crazy thought to make an alteration so people don’t crash alll the time, but hey. Maybe it’ll work :catglare: Just maybe.

Until someone sues the city its cheaper just to leave it. A few accidents are cheaper than engieering a new traffic pattern.
pretty much, as teh person who hit her brother likely already had a stop sign ect.

Lights are big money.

They could at least put up those 'DANGEROUS INTERSECTION' signs??? Right ??

Is reducing the speed limit in that area or placing a sign of some kind that warns people of the intersection/turn that expensive though? I get they building a rotary or something would be expensive but surely there exists a not as expensive method that reduces the chance of potentially bad accidents :coronawimwim: It doesn’t have to be something where months of construction are necessary in order to help to some level. Also if people are constantly getting into accidents like the police officer says I’m not sure the word “few” qualifies

Doing nothing is cheapest and doing something is an acknowledgement that theirs a problem. As soon as they acknowledge the problem, if they decide to do nothing it becomes negligence and thus if a lawsuit occures, it's a lot more expensive and damning. As long as no one sues it's a problem between you, the other driver and your insurance company.

Then why do road signs exist?

Most road signs are put up from the beginning. And when new ones need to be added they often wait until they do road work or for scheduled intervals. This way they can put up signs, make changes, etc with out relating it to a particular problem. Also, I bet a city can't put up a sign any where with out it costing thousands of dollars. It's not just the cost of the sign. You have to think about the costs of everyone from the guy who orders the sign, the city planner, the drafts man who has to update the drawings of the city, the guy who opens the box once the sign is received to the guy who goes to dig the hole and installs the signs. O, fun fact. A city has to issue it's self permits to install a sign. There's also the possibility that they have to do a traffic study to make sure it doesn't create other problems. Traffic studies are really expensive.

Even if it makes sense from a money perspective not to do something still seems a bit messed up that potentially saving lives is less important imo. Plus they’re still paying to replace the sign my brother hit trying to avoid the accident

I'd be shocked either your or the other guys insurance pays for the sign.

Maybe, I’ve never been in the situation before so I didn’t expect that damage outside of your car would be paid because it’s not your property. The point about that being a pretty messed up system stands though :pepechill:

A messed up system is how the US rolls. :icgyu: Generally who ever is at fault pays all the bills unless it's an act of nature. The rule of thumb is you should always be able to stop with out leaving your lane or causing further damage or accidents. My sister processes accident claims so I hear about this stuff all the time. What ever you do don't ever crash in to a power poll. OMG that's so expensive. :shockedcover:

But when the speed limit is high how can you do that? If that rule of thumb was followed freeways and highways wouldn’t exist no? :dubuthink:

Even if a road has a posted speed limit that is to high, who determined that? Using what way system of scientifically proven measurement. The city will always say that the speed limit wasn't to high, they'll say that you (or your brother) were going at an unsafe speed given the current conditions. The "current conditions" clause exists as a loophole to a diehard speed limit. Other wise you'd have idiots going 50mph in an ice storm or in fog with zero visibility simply because the sign says they can. Speed limits are the maximum but you can always be ticketed/pulled over/ or found at fault when traveling at a speed lower than the speed limit if the conditions are unsafe for that speed(rain, snow, fog, traffic).

But the police said nothing about that, they said my brother wasn’t at fault at all :dubuthink: He was going the normal speed limit in 100% normal conditions. The accident wasn’t because of any sort of recklessness for him despite him going fast, it was because the road sucks. I think if there was even the slightest way to pin it on him they very well could have tried to do so but they couldn’t, the best they had was “oh yeah everyone crashes here. That’s life. Just blame the other guy”.
