I'm not really mad but slightly annoyed. When this whole AI music hype started a few years ago, it was fun to experiment with AI and generating songs via Suno and Udio. I generated some songs too, I even shared some songs for free. But I always told listeners that the music was created by AI.

Unfortunately not all AI music creators thought the same way. Some of them started to flood music platforms like Spotify and Bandcamp commercially. They even founded whole fake bands and told people they're real. Now AI music is everywhere. On the other hand, it was clear that AI music generation would get out of control very fast.

I don't have a problem with people who listen to fake artists on Spotify. Many of those listeners don't even know that they listen to AI. But we need labelling for AI songs on music platforms. People should know when they don't listen to real human artists. Then they can decide if they still want to support this stuff.

Unfortunately we can't turn back time and AI won't disappear. We need to learn how we can deal with it.

By the way, here are some tips how I try to avoid AI-generated music. If you have more tips, feel free to post them here.

- If possible, I buy digital music on Bandcamp.

- When I stumble over a new band, I google the band and their members. Are there informations, articles, interviews about and with the band? Did the members play in other bands before? Are there live clips and did the concerts really happen? Of course, this works with soloists too.

- I don't trust Social Media selfies and short clips anymore. Generating them with Deep Fake technology is no problem nowadays.

- I still trust the big and popular music companies (that said, Suno belongs to Warner now...). Unfortunately I may get AI generated MVs from them too but there are still human artists in the background (at least I hope so).

- As Rick Beato mentioned, I check the follower count of a successful artist. But I don't rely on such statistics alone, followers may be fakes too.

- I could listen to well-known or at least better known artists only. But it doesn't work for me because I want to discover new artists.

this guy always shows up in my feed complaining about modern music and honestly i feel so understood even though i'm 24 and most things he usually says are boomer-like complaints lmao

i agree with everything he said here (except for the social media following aspect - most of my favourite artists are older people who obviously won't have as much followers as current A-listers because there was no instagram in the 80s) and the fact that ai music even is a thing pisses me off, let alone streaming platforms pushing it on people. it's just plain dystopian and it reaffirmed my beliefs that if i come across a song by an artist i haven't heard of before and its release year doesn't start with a 198 i'm not touching it with a ten foot pole.

I love 80s music too but there are so many great modern bands and soloists. That said, an 80s Pop album could be remastered with AI. Even a well-known music producer could start using AI-generated samples in his work for budget reasons. Music software may work with AI too: one of the most popular music production software or DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) is FL Studio. It has an AI assistant now.

I doubt it's possible to completely avoid AI in modern music (or even in remastered music from the past). But we can do our best to separate the wheat from the chaff.
