I've only recently found out about mine. And I really wish I knew more about it. Sadly, it's not a big part of my identity as I've had no direct linkage to it.

yea, despite growing up in the west since i was 4. our ethnic identity has always been very important to my people and it was always passed on to the younger generations with a no-nonsense mentality. there's not a lot of us, and after the genocide a lot of our folklore and national wisdom has been lost, so i understand why. i can't say i feel very connected to my culture but it definitely defines my norms & values despite the dissonance.

No, same. We had to do a family tree project, and the teacher told me to stop 'playing around' when I told her I couldn't do my family tree.

Yeah same, and when I handed in a project with the bare minimum that I did know, I lost marks because it was incomplete

I could only fill out two parts, for two of my siblings, but I have loads more.

I really don’t understand the purpose of family tree assignments for this reason. Not ever kid is going to know about their family, and not all families are willing to open up for a school projects. I really think they should be replaced with assignments like “someone you look up to” (it can be a family member, friend, teacher, celebrity, whatever)

But let's not forget the hardships of learning about your ancestry/culture on your own.

How quick people are to dismiss it about you, because you don't look/act like a certain stereotype.

Or the famous 'How could you even know, you don't even know anything about your family."

Adding onto this, most people will assume a darker person of color is faking their race/ethnicity all because they are dark.

Most blasian indivudiuals are accused of asian fishing, even fully black women/men with natural almond shaped eyes are accused of it!
Even though it's more common for black men/women to have almond shaped eyes than not.

I grew up in America but I would say my German heritage plays the biggest part in my life in regards to food. But everything else doesn't play a part in my life really.

It is a lot harder to learn about cultural identity on your own. Usually family guides children and show them traditions but not everyone has that and have to learn on their own at a much later age. Personally for me, I know I have Ukrainian ancestry but that’s about it (and didn’t know that growing up). I cannot speak on the second part very much as I’m not a POC but I will say that it is unfair to stereotype and classify people to fit and agenda. Don’t understand why people do that. Let people embrace the culture they know if they choose to do so. Not everyone is gonna fit this visual standard
