Jungle used to mean something very different (1 Viewer)

The etymology of the world jungle goes back all the way to Sanskrit where the word jāṅgala (जङ्गल) was used to refer to land that was rough, arid, or uncultivated. While I think rough and uncultivated (usually) is an acceptable word to describe a jungle, I think arid doesn’t fit with what many of think of when we think of a jungle It is worth noting though that “jungle” isn’t a scientific term of any sort because it’s too vague and inconsistent between cultures in terms of meaning. Instead, scientists use terms like “tropical rainforest”, “tropical dry forest”, etc to more accurately describe what native English speakers usually refer to as jungles.

"Jungli" (pulled from the same word) is still a popular "nickname" the parents use when kids sleep in late and dont wanna shower.

It’s less about actively avoiding that word and more about the word not existing in scientific vocabulary. It’s like the word chilly, everyone knows the meaning of chilly colloquially. But it wouldn’t work in a scientific context because it’s not well defined and varies drastically depending on the person. Even with the same person you can never know, Ive considered everything from 36F to 75F “chilly” depending on the context and that kind of range doesn’t work with science

Yep i use it to mean wildly over grown, inhospitable , ultra dangerous aside from the place where George and Tarzan are from. OFC triple canopy trop forest .
