News JYP Entertainment to cease the production of physical albums (1 Viewer)

Earlier this month, JYP Entertainment released their 2021 ESG (environmental, social, and governance) Report, which includes the company’s plans to cease the production of physical albums, in order to preserve the environment.

The excerpt regarding this decision is as follows:

“In order to reduce waste generated when purchasing albums, we are preparing various digital-based albums that can replace plastic physical CDs. When purchasing an album in this format, only photo cards will be received in person, while songs, behind-the-scenes videos, and lyric books will be provided through a digital code, and for this purpose, related technologies such as QR and NFC are being studied. Photo cards are also being considered to take on more eco-friendly production.

In order to reduce environmental pollution caused by album packaging, we will minimize packaging materials and introduce environmentally friendly elements in package design, and reduce waste by utilizing FSC-certified paper, soybean oil ink, and low emission coatings.

Furthermore, we will promote the eco-friendliness of our artist’s merchandise step by step. We will actively utilize eco-friendly materials such as biodegradable plastic made from natural produce and upcycling materials using discarded waste, as well as expand the use of reusable products such as clothes, ecobags, and tumblers made from natural materials. In order to achieve such goals, we will also work hard to create social value by reviewing cooperation with social enterprises and ventures in various ways.“

I'm a fan of this move but it's a bit of a shame for fans who like the physical album. Like many of the comments suggested, I wish they would offer this and then one version of a physical album. That way, we can put the album on "display" in our rooms and such. Otherwise, I would be happy if they gave us a poster instead.

Seems like madness from a business perspective as this move is designed to sell less albums than they are currently (as right now whales are incentivised to buy multiples to get the photocards they want).

Edit: And at the end of the day it’s the regular fans who buy 1 album and don’t throw it away that lose out here.

That’s what I was thinking. I think there are a lot of fans who love collecting, and don’t really care for digital albums. They’ll sell less albums with this idea

personally, that would keep me from buying future albums if imma be honest, i really enjoy having my physical albums displayed in my room

plus, unless you collect photocards or want to support twice with your money, buying a digital version is definitely unnecessary cause someone will leak everything from those QR codes anyways

Apink recently released a platform version of Chobom’s debut, which essentially is just a cardboard sleeve with photocards in and a code. ONF are releasing something similar next week. I wonder if JYP will be releasing similar things to that.

good, sucks for the collectors but most people listen to music on streaming services now anyway. never thought i'd compliment jype but in a world where western celebs are taking private jet flights like it's a 5 minute walk i suppose it's nice to see an entertainment company do something for the environment.
